Interesting comparisson, but not very useful imo. I used the TLM for about a year and noticed it has a bit of an annoying resonance on the high mids, which isn't an issue here but it would be bad for high pitched vocals or anything with strong high mids. Something like a female voice would have been more fit for a comparisson.

Btw, i never thought i would see that studio here. I buy my sushi a few blocks from there. Huh

i'm hearing that for the first time... neumann's microphones are actually quite inconspicuous and have a linear response...which microphone preamp did you use?

 

Kinda jumped between preamps. SSL alpha channel, Focusrite octopre, Presonus digimax LT, and a bunch of low budget interfaces. Also had access to two more TLM's every now and then, always heard the same thing.

This is the closest thing i could find to show you what i'm talking about. Take a listen between 13:13 and 14:38.

It is an abomination comparing the 102 with that Chinese crap microphone.

The 102 is the best sounding mic I've ever used till date, I remember when I wanted to purchase the mic and all the 8 experts at BH Photo choose it over all the bunch of expensive mics I picked and they were right.

You need to hear my vocals on this beast, never heard anything close. Trust me I'm not even bragging, I match my vocals with products from top studio and it leaves a big grin on my face.

I've seen friends sell the 87 and kept the 102, buy a brand new one and call it a day.

 

I don't agree with the term 'Chinese junk'....the MXL doesn't sound bad at all, and I'm really not sure if you would hear the difference clearly even if it was processed accordingly

 

I've just ordered the mxl 990 ... I want to know what it's good for

 

the MXL 990 lacks that chesty low mid frequency.

 

costs a lot less and it would be crazy if it sounded just as fine

Buy the MXL 990, swap the capsule out with one of these https://microphone-parts.com/collections/capsules , thank me later.

 

Just the capsule? the website also sells a circuit mod which may also be needed

 

I ordered the MXL 990 because I want to know what it's good for... there are no plans for an upgrade... I I'll report, stay tuned ....

Well, you can't result into insults already. I've large collection of mics worth over $350 000. So implying I am damaged by advertising seems like something a clueless person would say. Have a good one and good luck with your chinese mic

Keep comparing a German made mic to the one made at the back of a shoe factory in China and buy a $99 capsule and compare with a Neumann mic.
