Actually, in a Win7 DAW PC You need a few tools just to setup the system, like easybcd, dseo if you use some modified or unsigned drivers.

The goal has always been for me to get rid of as much unnecessary "tools and services" as possible.
at the end, what remains are:
    -WinRar
    -PowerISO
    -Notepad++
    -Disk Keeper
    -Revo uninstaller
    -CCleaner

Hello zukunft>I would certainly swap out XRecode for Illustrate dBpoweramp Music Converter which is extremely high quality, fast and state of the art for file conversion and SRC. While DAEMON Tools has every feature under the sun it also tends to take over the computer. A much more low profile and free alternative is Virtual CloneDrive. I haven't come across Xsearch, Teracopy and ReNamer so thanks for the heads up and I'll give them a try.

    Basically:
    • WinRar (for uncompressed audio) / 7-Zip (for binaries)
    • Total Commander w/ extensions
    • Notepad++ / GVim (because I like it)
    • CCleaner

FOLDER SIZE [by mindgems] - lets you see where all your HD space goes.

Large Address Aware - for 32bit EXEs to better address gfx cards and big ram (hopefully)

I really get a lot of use out of LameDropXPD.
    http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lamedrop.php
I wish there was a lightweight (portable) application out there like it that would let you specify the output format, though... If there is, I haven't run across it.

All the computers I assembled for audio and video editing have these on them.

    Audio SR Conversion:
Voxengo R8Brain [free], Foobar2000 w/SoX [also used for MP3 and AAC conversion]
Antivirus: no antivirus will ever set its foot into any of my audio systems. Using Debian Linux for Internet.
Compression: 7-Zip and Rar CL [free]
    Defrag: JKDefrag CL
Downloader: right mouse button>"save as", Plowshare CL downloader when needed for those terrible file sharing servers like Uploaded and Rapidshare [in Linux, since I don't use Internet in Windows]
Mount Image: WinCDEmu [Daemon can be problematic]
Registry: CCleaner and nothing else as these programs can cause problems. NTREGOPT for XP
Font Utils: ??? I'm not a graphic designer so IDGF about fonts
Files Search: ctrl+f ??? is the easiest
Files Copy: ctrl+c and ctrl+v ??? is the easiest
Rename Files: press F2, and also Bulk Rename Utility some very old version, when needed - to rename hundreds of samples
    Virtual Machine: VirtualBox

I'm keeping the systray as clean as possible, no background tasks. I don't use any programs that necessitate a background task. I also disable some absolutely unnecessary services like remote desktop, printer, internet related, but I use LAN with it. I avoid installing programs with Install procedure and usually install them in VM Windows first, and just transfer files into my real audio OS. It also makes sure there are no viruses. VM OS can also be used for browsing the Internet from Windows.

    Cheers!

p.s. CL means "command line". :winker:

Yeah and the slowest on earth.
I use voidtools everything... fastest search in the solar system
I also use classic shell to recover the forgotten start menu on windows 10 but as i'm switching back to w7...
last but not least, no antivirus. I prefer sporadic runs of AdwCleaner

I will be lost without my customized Directory Opus 12. Windows should come with this pre-installed instead of their embarrissing Explorer-thingie. I have a legit licence and its the best purchase I've made!

unless you're still on fat32 (who the hell still uses fat32?) defrag is redundant

registry cleaners are one of the biggest scams in the software world, they don't fix shit instead they create problems

total commander for file operations is GOAT
