    Had grab a quick bite or two was long day my friend .
    This right up my alley for sure it's sweet
    Expressive but not over indulgent
    A great balance of stillness and motion.
    A expansive language.
    It's using everything music has to offer
    It's what makes me love music itself.
    I can't find anything I don't mesh with in it .
    It's staying in my playlist.
    It uses the structure of music
    By means of the players sounding like no rip off or generic bull.
    And best thing it could have come out today as new release not some stale gimiky copy of a copy

    Thank you. Sorry to seem like I forced it on you but it shows we have common ground. A common tongue if you like. For music is a language and I have to say I only speak the equivalent of English. I do not have any sympathetic resonance with the music of the Middle East for example. This is not racial bias, simply ignorance on my part. The same way that Mandarin sounds harsh to my ears.

    1: I know this is an ensemble of musicians playing masterfully.
    2: From personal experience I know that to see anything like this played live is exhilarating.
    3: It is the jazz equivalent of guitar shredding. It is a constant barrage of as many notes from everybody all at once. There is no dynamics. It is cold, soulless music celebrating nothing but it's own cleverness.
    4: I am entitled to say this because I don't understand it in the same way I said I do not understand Middle Eastern music or I do not understand particle physics.
    5: Just as I may call myself a musician, I do not need to know jazz or Middle Eastern music or just as a particle physicist does not need to understand the work of an astrophysicist or a geophysicist.

    Lastly, this thread is not about jazz. I'm sure you can contribute without referring back to jazz.

    Eh, you are also using slightly incorrect terminology, derived from pop/jazz. Cmaj7 is actually called C major add major seventh chord - obviously, this name is not practical for jazz, because it is too long.
    So, in classical theory the added seventh is actually a dissonance that needs resolution and it is reflected in the name of the chord.
    The whole idea that it is a "complete" sonority is just a joke, wow. It is pretty dissonant chord even in just intonation, because the difference between the major seventh interval - 15/8 and octave (which is the second partial of the root note of our chord and is audible) - 2/1 is 16/15, which is a DISSONANT small interval and you can hear audible beating. The only way to avoid this beating is to use a timbre lacking second partial, which is not impossible with additive synthesizers.

    MMJ can open any book to check music-theoretical definitions and stop spreading disinformation.
    I am also pretty sure that he had never opened any work by Oettingen or Riemann, but tries to talk about functions, wow.

    About the complete chords - the only chords that will sound perfectly harmonious will be these that follow the harmonic series, so something like C-C-G(2 cents sharp)-C-E (15 cents flat from 12 equal)-G-Bb (31 cents flat)-C is a complete chord.

    CEG = pure major chord will sync to these higher harmonics. 12 equal major chord will have some dissonance, because ratios are not correct. It's obvious it is harmonic 4:5:6.
    Barbershop dominant seventh chord is harmonics 4:5:6:7. The more chords we add the more dissonant the chords become, so a 3 note chord will be always more harmonious.

    CEGB as a harmonic series is harmonics 8:10:12:15, this one is way more complex than 4:5:6 or 4:5:6:7.
    It is interesting that 3:4:5 or CFA (6/4 chord in figured bass notation) in just intonation is less dissonant than a pure major chord (and 6/4 chord is considered dissonant in classical music!), but because of how our brain works, we can't decipher the root note, because it starts on odd harmonic, so it sounds unstable to us (basically mammalian brain can decipher harmonic series starting only on even harmonics).
    Many vst plugins use harmonic series for similar psychoacoustic tricks, boosting selected frequencies to give a sense of depth when there is none, because our ears are easily fooled by it.

    I appreciate this explanation. But music described in words is as the old saying goes "dancing to describe architecture" It would be great if after each section, a short uploaded example played on the piano accompanied, for example the second last paragraph where 8:10:15:12 then 4:5:6:7 and that the 6/4 chord is less dissonant and somehow causes psychosacoustical instability. This sounds like the plot of the latest series of Stranger Things rather than music.

    Use tone generators or microtonal synth ( U-he, AAS, Xfer, Madrona, Tal, Omnisphere with Scala)?
    There were some online sites that could generate such chords.
    Btw, piano has inharmonicity (that's why it is so good for accompaniment, it cuts through "softer" sounds), so it's a poor choice for demonstrating anything related to harmony. Organs or "fake soft pianos" (electronic FM pianos for example) are more harmonious, if you want to test how something sounds for harmony.

    Here is 3:4:5:6 chord - create a txt file that you will rename to (whatever you like, in my case you can see below in the file that I named it 345).tun (don't forget this) and import into Xfer Serum or U-he, Tal or Omnisphere; AAS stuff uses other format. I have made the files from A to A. Anyway, it is recommended to try Scala; many people compose in just certain keys, there is no point in using 12 equal for limited pop music, if we can retune certain keys to be more pleasant.

    You're right, actually I don't like either this kind of terminology, I read mostly from piano staff, that I find much easier than something like "Cm7b5", even if I can deal with it.

    Also, your explanation is very interesting.

    But it seems to me that the clips posted at the beginning were just a superfast explanation of basic harmony / scales theory, they didn't delve much into microtonal, tuning hystory, spectral content of sounds, or psychoacoustics, that would deserve a separate and huge neverending discussion.
    And after all these words, I still use the modern equal temperament, and I still think that CEG is a just a C major chord in C major scale.

    Play one for yourself in different octaves to hear how it sounds and test it with different timbres...
    Any example that I would have given would be more limited than what you can test (I'm certainly not gonna waste more time with this).

    Well, we can't understand how theory works, if we don't delve in psychoacoustics and little tuning. My post was a reaction to previous discussion about what makes a chord complete.

    I agree with that - even if it's far more specialised than I'm inclined to get into. :)
    I get about as far as flattening a third slightly on a guitar - temporarily - to record a specific track, knowing that it sounds better for just that track and is totally screwed for everything else.

    But as for your recommendations for technology to use to explore the ideas....:)
    I just can't figure out why you left this beauty off your list. :winker:

    Best news I've had all day!!! Your version of reality is removed from anything that I would define as normal perspective. Carry on calculating pi until the end of time and leave music making to those who are concerned with expressing themselves not playing math professors.

    I understand where you coming from my friend .
    I wasn't exposed to this type of music growing up or in.my generation .
    It was when I started studying music history on my own and musicology that I heard jazz like this and other things chamber music music from all different time periods .
    It took me while to get into new things I hadn't been exposed to .
    However the only difference between this jazz stuff and the yes song you posted is surface level like the sounds and beats .
    The underneath music language is identical
    ( That's what I mostly listen for )

    In 1945 they only had limited tecnology
    For equipment and amplification
    So they used horn instruments the volume created by lungs of person
    This is from 1935
    Check it out it more laid back

    1) YES - YES - YES - THEY ALL are C major chords within other scales, didn't you know that there are common chords among them? Actually, they are even used to modulate to other tonalities

    2) stop making misuse of accidentals - there are flats and sharps and they all have their proper use, writing A# is NOT Bb, you should know the difference between chromatic and diatonic half tone - example:

    GAA#CDEF#G"

    ARE WRONG!

    They shoud be:
    GABbCDEF#G
    GABbCDEbF#G

    Summing the 2 points up: you might be a wonderful player (no pun intended), but you know very little of musical theory.

    I suggest you to have a look to the courses of DR. B, (here in this thread, one of the best courses on YT) and btw ask the same stupid question you asked me.

    Are you familiar with the term it means the notes are equivalent .
    You should be good enough to know
    Every A# is identical in every way to Bflat
    Every sharp should register in your brain as an equivalent flat such that the outcome is seeing a sharp or flat note your brain registers both they are equivalent ( as opposed to being so unfamiliar it hits you wrong way and you actually get upset to the point of nit picking what your preferences are
    There is no flat symbol so in a forum when long string of notes it's common to use the sharps
    Since b is a note .
    It is your responsibility to have no preference over seeing a sharp or flat because you need to drill it in to the point of naming both notes when you see a sharp or flat .
    This type of bizzare nit picking , is indicative of a amatuer . :(
    However I don't think badly of your random attempt at insulting me .
    After all if the worst thing in my life I do is showing the enharmonic version of a note you yourself are somehow uncomfortable with , I can sleep just fine at night my friend.:)

    I just read a couple of posts up, so i don't know if there was anything constructive going on. Guess not.
    See, this is the one and only sentence, from which you can deduce with a 100% certainty that someone doesn't have any knowledge (beyond the very basics) about music theory. :( I will not waste my time explaining how important this is, because I know you know it. :yes: My only suggestion would be to stop discussing this content with individuals that are not on your level and are not willing to learn. You will save yourself time and headaches..

    Rather save the energy for those (like me), who will sooner or later need help or confirmation from a pro. :wink:
