I love sketching, design, modeling miniature work, sci-fi prop-making but, I detest freaking Lego
I can't stand the darn thing, its such a disappointment to me every-time I expect to see a "serious" built in a video like Adams and I find out its darn "lego"..

And to see grown-ups using lego is even more irritating to me lol.

can it just be that I didn't use lego as a child? I find lego simply horrible both out of an aesthetic and design point of view, its simply not good looking and so limited in its look and overall expression..

so sure a bit of a "hate" theme here, but its really not my point, im just curious to hear from other "design" interested people what you think. Cheers

As a child the only toy i ever wanted was legos, thats all i ever played with or got my parents to buy me from ages like 7-13, the amount of pure joy i can conjure to my darkened heart on these memories of playing with boats i made in the bathtub or the cities id build still is palpable. I can sort of understand the idea of not liking them as an adult, but as someone whos done alot of sci-fi modeling, cgi, vfx and prop work i find value in pre-made puzzle pieces I could use to express simple ideas and models. Idk, i don't really use alot of anything psychical when working on 3d models anymore. IMO they have a worth its just outweighed by how cost prohibitive lego can be due to the high tolerances to which their bricks are made

But all in all i'd have to say "if my day's worst task was playing with legos it was a good day"

    hehe, sure I understand.

must have to do with the fact I didnt have a relation with it. I find them to clumsy looking, uninspiring and lacking detail. but I think im missing the point lol

Ironically i think that IS the point, the lack of detail is like only having a certain set of after effects scripts you use, or a certain number of vsts you use, you get really good with what you have and it kinda ends up working in your favor if you have that magical child like imagination, as a serious modeling tool, legoland is proof they are [IMG] [IMG]
I assure you these are more amazing in person

Always willing to share perspectives and hear them. Legos are crazyyyy expensive though, that themepark is really awesome art exhibit even as an adult.

yeah thanks for sharing your thoughts. well i guess its like so much else, certain things it works better with than others. and some people will like it and some will not

the feel i got it was so much of a branded product it almost totally killed the vibe for me to be able to see as material for "art" or design. it has kind of premade toxic feel, like having a vibe for mac-donalds burger packages.. or working with coke bottles, cant shake that feeling

anyways, adam did a nice job there, and looked from a far its even better ;)

ahhhhh i would build the sets, for the passtime, then take any car that was well designed and keep it because cars were hard, then i would just throw all the stuff in 4 bins, figures, figure acessorys, bricks and the "neat stuff box". I RARLEY kept a set together for more then half a month

aside from specialty pieces , legos force you to think outside the box .

its akin to building with raspberry pi

Lego is for people wanting to design within constraints.
I'm a 64 year old and my 60's generation was more about blowing up or melting constraints.
We had a blank piece of paper/tape and got stoned/went apeshit and filled the medium.
Check out Cluster II, Musik Von Harmonia for freeform sonic examples.
God, how I miss Conny Plank and Dieter Moebius.

I'm not quite at the 'detest it' level, but your arguments do resonate with me.
    • I love all modelling devices, physical or virtual; anything that helps to explore creative constructing and deconstructing.
    • I acknowledge the wonderful achievements of people that have pushed lego artistry as far as they can
    • I love cartoons and I love fantasy movies - even totally silly ones sometimes.
So why the hell do I find it impossible to watch a lego movie? They are an immediate turn off for me.

I see what you mean, though i can't think of an easier way for kids with imagination to do quick 3d physical modelling. Thinking about it, i wonder if anyone's every quizzed a large sample of architects as to who were keen on lego when young? Far more than not, i'd have thought...

A few people recommended the first one, so i reluctantly gave it a go. Turns out (in the main) to be a very pithy satire on identity within the (american) neoliberal dream:

This cleverly allows cognicient viewers to forgive/forget that this film is probably the most focused product placement vehicle in the history of cinema. Watch this film and you will experience quite an unusual critical duality throughout. :snuffy:

My problem is that I will eagerly accept your review (which I don't doubt at all) rather than actually watch it myself.
I quite literally feel like I need to switch it off before I get anywhere near forming an opinion.
It's just something about the visual style (which must have something to do with actual Lego surely).
I feel the same instant negative response to some styles of comic too. I just don't want to get past my rejection. :dunno:

That's fair enough. Children look past the nobbly look better than adults, which is why i think Minecraft is lego's modern digital equivalent - it looks totally shit but is universally popular with pre-teens...

well to be frank. i feel the same, and even worse, i find those movies repulsive. its and insult even to a childs brain. currently the u.s entertaining industry is excelling in flooding the market with imbecile plastic productions, forcing them down our throat just because they can, since they still manage a gigantic oligopolic distribution system, heritage of a time where hollywood still had a raison d'ĂȘtre.

but since there still is a huge amount of people (in cinema, tv, streaming services, "reviewers"=corporate tools, etc) who still depend financially on the derivates of that crap very will want to call it out. the intellectual and artistic level is so low you get a clear bad taste in the mouth of being fed shit, but when you look around everybody is cheering so you think its just your imagination..

Legos are the best. As a kid my house was the spot because kids wanted to come over and build Lego race cars and race them down a hill. You guys probably just didn't know how to play with them properly.

The movies are dope because they employ satire and even poke fun at some of the rudimentary physics of Legos.
