So if you decide to put a compressor at the start of the mix, and mix through it....

how do you set it up? is there any particular way?

can you explain me how this works?

    thanks

    NO

    Not Really, follow your Ears/Taste.
This comes from Mixing Desks. The SSL 4k had the comp available and mixed into it
thats the 4000 Sound as it where.
But barely moving the needle maybe 1-2db at 10-1ratio(slow(not killing the transients)
& because the circuit has a sound of its own.

SOOOO experiment, of course! But if you dont know, you probably dont need it!
    And i´m not being condescending!
It can be very difficult to gauge all the things you are doing (while mixing)
Maybe try it out with some stems
But even that is useless because you cant do a proper A/B!
Thats when you are deep into a mix (from beginning) and you take the comp out it can be a totally different tune/feel.
Attack and frequency change with the Bus Comp engaged/desingaged

@dondada, if in software, how does just using the bypass on an master buss insert like a compressor not serve correctly as an A/B comparison? or if you had two plugins as the last inserts in the master chain...

you must consider the decision you make are depended on what you hear
which in turn is modulated by the bus comp (or whatever you choose in the maser/bus)
    this includes everything:
    Volume of tracks
    amount of compression
    amount of eq

its easy to keep track of individual channels and a comp.

But a drum group volume mixed with eq´s, with a
    bus comp that goes into
a master bus comp/limiter like for instance a waves 4k
    which brings out certain frequencies

now imagine vocals, synths, bass and so on
if you take the bus out, one of the main factors of sound is gone!
against what are you a/b ing?
just the sound of the 4k? or every decision the 4k influenced
so a/b is gone! you just gauging the actual sound of the 4k vs 0

do you understand what i mean?:dunno:

I think I do. you are saying that rather than just comparing the sound of the compressor circuit being on or off, versus how it interacts; because this will differ from one fx module to another. so it really is not just a/b. a different fx type could be closer to a direct comparison than a compressor. (or limiter also, then)
