avoid like plague things like this, every song is different and we all know this.
general guideline? sure, but you risk of putting noobs (like me) into a box, and then they have trouble getting out

Dear me, without an explanation this pic can be very misleading!

    - in Hard Rock/Heavy Metal the guitars are where the strings are in the pic, the strings should be where the lead is i.t.p. and lead (guitar) will be where the guitars are i.t.p.
    - the hihat is mostly moved a bit to one side (in Rock and EDM, especially if there are two hhs)
    - piano in the center would clash with attack sound of bass and kick, with the snare, claps and vocals. So better move to one side a bit
    - bass freqs 40 - 200Hz??? Muddy between 100 - 200Hz, no attack sound between 800 - 2000Hz Try to explain that to a bassist and prepare to run
    - kick 80 - 400Hz??? Not enough low end, muddy..., no kick sound in mid range, Try to explain that...
    - guitars from 1 - 3kHz??? Bunch of lower mids are missing. Try to explain that...
    - strings 2,5 - 12kHz??? Try to explain this to a cellist... Even vioals and violins go way lower (and should be audible there)
    - claps up to 10kHz??? Raise the volume and try not to bleed out of your ears.
    - hihat not below 6kHz??? Yeah, sure.
    - volcals only down to 500Hz??? Ok, this could work with very young girls...

I probably missed something, but it should be sufficient so far.

No offense to OP, I guess he didn't made that pic, but on it's own this pic is pretty useless.

The graphic is kinda ok if you are flexible about moving things around a bit. The message I got from it was to give everything its own space. Incidentally, Klanghelm VUMT Deluxe includes a Mono Maker option (bottom right) which is quite handy for mixing. I use this plugin on every track & bus for gainstaging, as well as setting the lower frequencies to mono on the 2Buss.

You're right, I didn't make this. But I like these kind of pics, because eventually somebody critises and gives detailed information like you.
As I know, that pic and settings belongs to a song by Diplo.

So it was a trap and I got caught? :( [IMG]

Maybe add a line like "Wot u fink?" Could spare you some dislikes, OTOH, who knows these days...

(And btw, I listened to some of Diplo's track's, most of the freq ranges don't match...)

Frequency-wise this picture isn't accurate but is a great way to conceptualize sound locations for stuff imo

if you learn the sound characteristics of the iconic compressors and eqs, listening music on hq headphones will give you a good idea how they did it. problem i hear with most of today's music is that every channel is treated hi-fi. and that's wrong big time. good luck with mixing.
ps.: i'm not leaving audiosex :)

On principle that's a good thing, but if you have the balls you may like to try it here

diplo is more a dj...then producer....and he was to the right time with right people...but you could also say he now is sell out...but he has fun and is cool guy...
but not everybody is like goldie who has his engineer in back...but some of them uk producers were and are real engineers..forgot name..

EDIT...oxford uni has done an interview with diplo..not bad...worth watching..

EDITEDIT but i say better learn arranging and play youre wanted music first before learning engineering...you will be more of an innovative artist...maybe not a better artist...bla..you kno what i mean...and when using ears and dont overthrow tracks its makeable...just use akai950 lol
    ------
dynamics its its own art you can get lost easy...i was long time he he..testing testing testing...on kitchen monitors lfmao...but now i can mix dude...forgive me he he..

General guideline, indeed, but total noobs to mixing could find it useful. That's why you got "like" from me.

Too many people have no idea how to pan sounds, and what instruments are better off left mono. Remember that stereo is a mix of mono sounds, panned within a stereo field. So actually nothing is mono in the end, when it comes out of a stereo master bus. Frequency wise, it's missing a lot of frequencies. Every instrument has at least a couple of important fundumentals, like high and low, for example. Then there is mid-high and mid-low. Just like a quality console parametric EQ.

But yes, it's still good to keep this pic in mind, I think, because making a song and mixing is like painting [a bus with a toothbrush - Quincy Jones :)].

knowing them and mix them is more important then having compressor on every shit...
no not kno them ..hearing them i meant..

and of course its good pic....but its not the whole story... but it has some elementals bla..
dont kno why discuss that...mixing is relative art form just like all other art..
