Im experimenting with my mixbus, still in setting up mode. Im curious what you guys do to your mixbus to shape your sound, it can be like a unique footprint, a signature in a way.
Plus i like to know if you got a chain on from beginning, like mixing into a compressor, or do you stack stuff during the process. I know there are severall methods, and i know its a critical thing, to put stuff on mixbus, possibly easy to f**k up the whole thing.

How much compression could be used on mixbus, so there‘s enough room for mastering. By the way, putting plugz on mixbus/masterbus , isnt that kind of mastering in a way?

I'd say 3dB below LUFS target is ok, 1dB is too less.

If you're talking about subgroup eqing and compressing, I'd say its in-between mixing and mastering (normally it belongs to mixing, but there's also subgroup mastering, so...).
But mainout/masterbus processing is in deed mastering (maybe even pre-mastering).

@No Avenger Ah ok, thx for clearing that up for me!!
So subgroup editing is my nee goal, just got that morphit allways on masterbus to perfect my dt-880, freeze it before mixdown for sure. Thank you

Edit: so you say compression on masterbus is ok to a certain extent? cause at mastering compression might be added? Confusing:woot:
Cause you talked about the target loudness volume. Sorry if i cant transport the issue in simple speach, cause you got pro knowledge, and i just begin to learn. Thx anyway

General rule is to setup a sub-master with effects to feed all you tracks into for normal mixing situations.
Thus you would use your main Master bus with effects for mixing final stereo tracks.

This is due to the delay offset caused between tracks with effects & the master track with effects.

Also, when using effects, you can use as many as is reasonable with each doing just a little at a time.

Lots of info on this in print and on youtube.

I wouldn't do that at all with a neutral sounding compressor, but if you want to apply a character comp to a tiny amount, just to colour the whole track, then, yes.

When I mix and master a track, I meanwhile prefer not to master the stereo file, but subgroups like vocals, synth, guitars, drums and bass. This way I often achieve a better result especially when it comes to dynamic treatment.

It's not so much about the peak level (can even be above 0dB with FP wav) but to stay below the LUFS target for more than just a single dB.
