Thoughts on this as a small body of work..

    soundcloud.com/jacksonalmond/sets/sauce/s-hYMkZ

I've been working on headphones a lot recently - mostly really shitty in-ears. I just invested in a pair of RHA in-ear monitors and started to notice that the more recent work i've done is either really top heavy or too upfront .

The top track Ee Ye I did this evening on the RHAs and the other 3 I did on a Shure pair that are over 10 years old & reaaaally suck in the low / low mids.

I'd like to work them all to sound consistent next to each other but I'm not sure which one to match the others too if that makes sense...

  3. Yo Jackson, it's OK but it's not as good as it could be. The low end is almost absent and the top end sounds cramped. This is correctable in mastering, so you're nearer than further.

I've never used buds of any kind, but you can get 95% of good monitoring using an emulator like Waves NX (mucho dollars) or TB Morphit, which offers binaural reproduction of a flat monitor using specifically named pro headphones, which have been matched to exact frequency responses.

    Thanks for this Fudsey.

I tried out NX for this last year with my Sony MDR-7509HD I think they are a little too old to make the cut for TB list..

I was sort of unsure if I found it useful - probably down to using those cans in the evenings after working in a really boomy room, I was constantly battling kick low end thinking it was okay then going in the cans and realising it sounded like a knock on a wet cardboard box.

Maybe Nx just added another level of confusion at the time. Will give Morphit a go this afternoon - can't really argue with the price.

I know using in-ears is a bit of a touchy subject for some - my old housemate is a mix / mastering engineer, has audeze lcds, neuman monitors, subpac amongst other options that i'd tried out.

He encouraged me that if it felt right not to worry too much as long as I was referencing enough material to understand the in-ears well.

On Ee Ye right? I want to focus on getting that fixed to match the others with later on..

I get really great results with morphit + nx on my k812 and my dt 990. Really impressive. I can recomend it!
