In May last year, the Minimal Audio team released Rift, a killer distortion plug-in. In 2022, it remains the illest mofo of its kind and a must have for roughing up tracks. I’ve already shared my Rift sentiments in the Gearnews review, so I’ll be heading straight for the news instead of lovebombing the Minimal guys. They just dropped Rift 2.0 with two big additions to an already sophisticated (but brutal) product: multi-band effects and dark mode. Further refinements include UI tweaks and lighter CPU load (always welcome). The 2.0 update is free for existing users.

Prices and dates for the new plug-in version of Minimal Audio
You can currently get Minimal Audio Rift 2.0 on the developer's website for the introductory price of 79 euros instead of 129 euros. The smaller version Rift Filter Lite is included in the price. The plugin runs on macOS 10.9 or higher and Windows 10 or higher as AU, VST, VST3 and AAX in 64 bit. Unfortunately, there is no demo version, but there is a way to return the effect after 30 days if you don't like it. You can download a PDF user manual from the website. A number of presets are included in the package.

I'd love to try this one but man idk why it's so expensive (at least to me, it's completely out of reach for a distortion plugins).

 

Currently on sale for $79. I'd say it is worth the ticket. It's a great piece of software and does much more than any typical distortion plugin. It can do all kinds of tricks and I find myself reaching for it regularly. But definitely try out the free version or use their 30-day return policy to get your money back if you don't like it.

Exactly, my friend(may I call you "my friend"?)! For ambient and noise-oriented music: rhythmic noise, drone, dark ambient, broken techno, industrial-techno, harsh noise.

 

Since iZotope gave away Trash 2 for free, I've not really thought about any other distorted filter plug-ins, but I would be interested to hear how it would compare to Rift 2. Rifts filters and modulation sections seem to be more powerful and have better workflow in general! Trash is pretty old by now so I'm guessing there are many things under the hood of Rift that are more modern and updated.

I own Saturn 2 as well, but I use it more for smoother saturation/distortion. I use Trash more for... well, trashy distortion

Does anyone who own both Rift and Trash and have some insights into what Rift does better? Workflow, CPU optimization, modulation, sound in general etc.

 

My distortion plugin folder is ridiculous - is this really that good? Better than thermal and all the other usual suspects?

 

I've bought Rift 1 on day one, and I've used it on all my project since then, this thing is really cool!
You can use it as a distortion, but it's far more thant that, you can throw on anything and completly mangle the sound if you want to... ;)

Thanks for the tips, I already own a few distortion plugins and I'm quite satisfied by them, Rift is a unique best tho and I always wanted to try it but I just can't afford it right now. It happens.

Yes, I've installed it, had a problem with the number of seats used, I've contacted the support and 20 minutes later problem solved!
