So there's a pretty noticeable delay from when I press a key and when the sound plays,
any idea what causes this?

 

Audio buffer size, interface and system.
Midi do not have delay, if you bypass you will know.
GIYF right?
With DOS I never had a delay... You should try!

 

lower your buffer size. what DAW, audio interface, controller? are you using. more info is needed if you expect any kind of real help

 

How do I bypass? GIYF? DOS? I'm lost, hehe.

FL Studio :P
No audio interface at the moment, but I plan to get a PreSonus 22VSL
m-audio 61es which plugs into the computer via usb, also planning to replace this

Audio latency depends on the ASIO driver buffer size. FL Studio comes with a generic ASIO driver. Use this generic ASIO driver and set the buffer size to 256 samples or 6ms. You should then hear the audio coming from your speakers almost instantaneously, with 6ms of latency. Cheers!
