We have lots of Audio (sample) File Managers to choose from, but are there any Midi File Managers? It would be great to preview midi files/loops without dragging and dropping. ToonTrack EZ series can do this . . . any simpler options out there?

Note: In my case, I'm on a Mac.

    1.) MIDIPlayer X 4+
Fast and easy MIDI file player

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/midiplayer-x/id954177929?mt=12

2.) Fast New Way to Preview MIDI Files in Mac OS! | Audition Midi Files in Newer Macs!

sing third party midi files is a great way to gain knowledge and inspiration when producing your own music. Unfortunately, the ability to audition MIDI files is no longer possible in Mac OS by just clicking the file. There is a great work-around to regain this function. It's an inexpensive App called MIDIPlayer X. This allows you to browse midi files in Mac OS by just clicking through the files. I hope this helps you as much as it helps me! Cheers, Rob Check it out here: www.methodred.net/midiplayerx/

That's a cool app. I've used for editing, but never explored it's file management. I use primary for education and the whole virus thing shut the school down. I'm a bit rusty with this part of music production. MidiYodi is definitely worth trying!! Plus, the developer is a groovy dude . . . more than happy to support his efforts if it does the job!!

Any other inexpensive/free options? App Store, perhaps?

You may also consider MidiYodi, from Canato, a Swedish developer. I didn't try it yet but it's not expensive at all (around €/$18) and compiled for Windows, OSX, and Linux. It is recent, the current update is from February 2021.

Check out the page MIDI File Explorer.

    It also contains, for example:
... and a few other interesting little tools.

If there's no bad surprise I'm pretty sure it could be a good tool for your purpose.

For only €/$18 it is probably a perfect bargain.

Good luck finding one, I was looking for one years ago and ended up using good old reapers media browser, Midi yodi doesnt do wat u are looking for i guess, simple google search shows midi yodi, but nope, ive used it, u can browse through midi files and stuff but it cant analyze midi for its key/pitch, it just reads whats in the tag and displays it, to my knowledge, i dont know if anything has changed since, it was like 4 years ago.

MusicDevelopments Fyler comes close but its such a pain in the ass, and unfortunately Win only.

it has become a niche to mass market, every stupid sample vendor has one of those crap, but they forget about midi completely, because its a bit complicated than audio as a single midi file can also contain multi channels, not to mention the channel 10 for percussion, that has to be excluded when analyzing for key/pitch when dealing with multichannel midi.

10 or 12 years ago none of the media player software had pitch detection, Mixed in key came along with Beatunes which were paid, and then after a couple of years Pioneer started giving it for free in Rekordox..
To my knowledge there isnt one atleast for now, maybe someone like Musicdevelopments will start, and others will just tag along. On that perspective MD is way ahead of time like their flagship product RC, which was introduced in 2010 WAAAAAY ahead of synfire, ORB Composer/Producer, Scaler, WA insta stuff, Midi madness. But their downside is just a bit complicated to use.

RapidComposer (Pro edition) is my composition software since 2013, and I confirm: it is awesome but very complex so not at all to let to beginner's hands.

When I have to make way simpler things or for teaching purposes I use FeelYourSound Sundog Studio. Very simple, very good and Win+OSX, but way less comprehensive. But the workflow is ultra-fast to get first very good results, especially on EDM genres.

Off-topic: I take the opportunity to mention another great tool that I use every day from FeelYourSound: XotoPad, which turns your Windows tablet into a multipurpose and multitouch MIDI controller.

Only available in version that works ONLY with Prosonic's own midi files.
Not only that, a midi pack I downloaded from Sister Site places "Prosonic Demos" in the root of C drive. WTF?

I am personally building an Electorn MIDI player app.
This is not optimized for people and I don't think it will ever be public.
But I can share you some part of the codes, if you want.

In the end, I came to the conclusion that it is more free, fun and convenient to create the programmes I want myself.

I personally use EZKeys with my own midi library and route the midi out via the drop down menu to my Virus ti.or any source.just means i can preview all files in context.plus if you set up the routing you can place midi fx in the chain to produce basslines, arps or chords.i find using chord progressions works best.

Maybe Total Commander together with the TCPlayer plugin would do the job. You could organise your midi files inside folders and browse/play them with this set up using the Quick View pane.
