It's called Software as a Service and starts the era where Windows has to be online in the middle range, to function properly.
They will do it like Adobe with there Subscription Cloud- but without standalone versions for the masses, on a highly protected level.

The pipeline to Microsoft will meant to be permanent.

All together with there tracking capabilities and there so called trusted computing activities- bad news for the warez scene.
We have already seen Windows 10 deactivating applications, without user permission.

HW/SW Manufacturers would finally cut their umbilical cords and start with crossplatform support on large scale.
And then, M$ would go bankrupt.

    About time

It just came out, and I mean, almost no one cared (except the victims of the forced upgrade obviously), because well it sucks. But the few that actually cared a bit about this software of theirs because they bought it just realised that they didn't buy anything but a "service" and the future right to get f....d for eternity.
Great company M$, great OS Windows 10.

It's about time we had a dedicated Audio OS without the bloatware  Producing music with what appears to be nothing more than a thinly disguised internet monitoring tool is just plain laughable

Real-time music production systems should only be doing one task that is directly related to audio.

This whole "transformation" process that Windows is going through might bring just that. I mean good luck to the daw devs with keeping up with a constantly evoluting OS/service.
Or it might get worst and we'll all have to switch to Mac.

Hans Zimmer migrating back to Win XP is the biggest news right now in Hollywood.
He already ordered his staff to reclaim his old Pentium 4 Servers that he donated to UNICEF.

Apple announced Audio Unit v3 SDK in 2015 (which among others makes easy development of AUs simultaneously for both iOS and OS X). So anything is possible at this point: OS X becoming MacOS, Apple developing their own CPUs for Macs, or a distant merge between iOS & (Mac)OS(X). It's bit twisted (as always, lately) with Apple but for the near future it seems they care about audio production.

Let us not forget the importance of the consumer (paying and otherwise:winker:) in shaping the markets.

Remember when we could only buy vinyl, cassette or CD? and then what happened ... Napster and the appearance of the MP3.

That is a clear example where the consumer dictates the market. This can happen again.

    Viva La RevoluciĆ³n!:guru:

You're right: consumer don't care if the windows is xp, 12.6, 7, 8 or 10. Consumer wants a device which can be safely used to consume: go online, play games, read news and do VR-shit (if that becomes mainstream).

Time to start to think about moving to Linux for Music production.

That's what I (and others) have been saying about OSX since 10.8 or so. All the cutesy consumer crapola that comes with it (i.e., "Stickies" - gimme a break!) Both Windows and Mac have been slighting their audio- (and video-) production constituency. The cloud-based stuff is both treacherous and a scam. At least Adobe has free-standing versions of Creative Cloud applications (though for how much longer?). With an ever-morphing/-updating OS instead of distinct upgrade versions, there's going to be disaster. The irony is that software had been considered a "product," and now it's being morphed into a "service," which is a big rhetorical difference.

But then there's business clientele which wants security, performance and flexibility, with security being the nr. 1 concern and MS with its Win10, nor any cloud-based OS can really fulfil that requirement.

I'm very skeptical and see no big difference between Apple, Microsoft or Google related to this marketing strategies.

Actually MS does now, what others did before. And they do this on a very straight way.

Using Linux/Unix since more than 20 years partially in business, I do not see that this will be the big alternative for creatives in the future.

I guess, we are all fucked...sooner or later.

Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook are to big to fail. They fight for the last bit of our privacy now.

And they give a shit. It's all about shareholder value.

Rest assured that any OS developer does it's best to ensure security & performance. If businesses need something extra, this may be only the backwards compatibility. And even this is not a big problem anymore since it's easy to power on virtual machines for legacy tasks, until the respective software is finally updated. VM's are that cool.
The solution to a good business network do not relies in a single OS, it's a sum of: good practice employees training, workstation OS, server OS, database programming (this is rather crucial), firewall, network administrator policies (from topology to mac filtering & Bio/NFC/USB dongle log-ins) and good walls to prevent intruders to physically connect to the network.
