The popular file hosting site Megaupload has been shut down by US authorities on Thursday, and the site’s leaders have been charged with widespread online copyright infringement. According to an US Department of Justice press release, Megaupload generated more than “$175 million in criminal proceeds” and caused more than “half a billion dollars in harm to copyright owners”.

Seven members of the site and two corporations – Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited – were indicted by a grand jury in Virgina, and charged “with engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement”.

Sobh – On Megaupload the links lived longer than on any other site!
No worries, one closed down soon other ones will raise.
    Those web-gestapos really suck.

    A REAL shame.

Megaupload were a very cool site.

Big loss to the scene. Guess KookaBro has it right tho, another will spring up to fill the gap. Hopefully the Guys running Megaupload will put up a good fight and receive support from Their many MANY Users.

Lets hope some good can out of Their case.

This whole MESS needs sorting................ IN OUR FAVOR!!!

Maybe that was the problem in the first place

Not compiling to DMCA notices in a time manner

That and all the movies they host on the servers

It was going to happen to them sooner then later

Wow, Megaupload shut down right after the Blackout. Was it worth the effort? Looks like the feds can do anything they want, even without the anti-pirate legislation being law. Are we screwed anyway? Maybe so.

Yes, they can do anything they want. Go ahead and ask them. Of course, if they tell you why, then they'll have to kill you! :)

    They'll keep going
If they lose they get a new name
If they win they get flooded with Viruses.
Remember thepiratebay.org I think it was won in cought now then they had their viruse problem.
Don't know about now I never went back

Just seen on ABC world news 6:30pm EST today, Cyber hackers have shut down the US Justice department and US Patent Office web sites in opposition to the US Fed's Megaupload.com shut down.

Sure did not see this coming. Surprise!

This thing is out of control, whats next?

I don't know about other countries, but in the U.S. if you want the "goodie", Christian puritan work ethic says ideally you must work harder (most times much harder) than what the goodie is worth to get it. This is to ensure your favor with God and a nice little space in Heaven (so you're enticed to believe), not to mention the added benefit (only for them) to the corporate and religious pigs who line their pockets with the cash, and enjoy the goods and infrastructures generated by your hard labor. In other words, they get the meat, while you're left with the bones and gristle. This is an old story and never changes. Of course they want full control of the internet, because they believe it's a conduit for the truth in the form that it exists today. This sharing of truth is what they're most afraid of. It really has very little to do with file sharing. Most of us are aware of the studies and know the real story concerning the file sharing fiasco.

So, as I understand it, federal agents from the country which proudly claims to be the standard-bearer of freedom forbids a French living in Belgium (me) to access a website hosted in Hong-Hong and owned by a German, is it right ?
May I ask the FBI to refund me my premium account ?
