No, Parallel compression is only needed to add something missing from either a specific sound, group of sounds, or a buss, not really needed on a master level, if you do... you probably have a problem with your mix in the first place.

But it sounds warmer on the master instead of weak/thin!

Nothing like working with "engineers" who think in terms of the categorical.

    ...they don't last long.

Yes. It's called the parallel mix wet/dry knob. :)

There cannot be one answer for all situation / genre / songs.
It all depend of what are you mastering, and what's your goal.

    i said
again ON A MASTER LEVEL... god damn.

adress each element/buss with it's own para comp to get the best out of it.

I fancy some dry/wet sometimes with a compressor on the master buss.

the same is true for anthing else in an audio mastering process.

but the practice of mixing companies proves you right: it is indeed mostly done when mastering or mixin stems, not the sum.

It depends. I know it's different, just to give you some analogy... I tried Schepps Parallel Rear Bus trick many times and it never sounds good to me but some people swear by it. It's all about your personal taste.

i never understood the need, if you compress 4db gr on the master but you want it 50% parallel, why not just compress 2db only in the first place?

If parallel compression on the master makes your track sound more like you want it to, then by all means do it. But I think you'd get way better results by actually identifying what you like about it, and apply it at track/bus level instead.

Disclaimer : The following information may only be of use to engineers that mix and master their projects.

Pro Tip: When mixing send all the tracks except bass, drums and percussion to a buss.
Then heavily compress it with a unit that sonically enhances the sound. I also widen the image a little.
Then blend it in to taste. This achieves a similar sound but is much more controlled.

Sorry if I went off topic, I was just trying to add additional information.

Oh by the way. I also parallel comp the drums and bass on their individual tracks or group busses.

If you are mastering and applying parallel compression, a similar effect can be achieved by using a sidechained input with the bass rolled off.

    Sorry if off topic.

My Bad, You are right. Maybe this should have been posted in the Mastering Only section LOL. Instead of Mixing and Mastering.
I will add a disclaimer to my posts. Sorry.
