Heres a copy of a post of mine (it was about FM8 1.1.1) from May this year on avax.

Background was that i was annoyed that they would add another installer (176MB) to the download just to get around a restriction that can be circumvented with a couple of bytes.

Assign (and anyone else who is interested), if you are reading, here is how to make the NI update installers install WITHOUT having to install a previous 'full' version first.

(The updates are full versions too, its just that their installers have that annoying 'IsProductAlreadyInstalled' check built in.)

The whole procedure can of course be automated by making a little custom installer (or wrapper) just for that purpose.

General Info
------------
What the update installers do is this:

1) RegQuery for a RegKey

2) If RegKey exists, query whether RegKey contains a string value containing a path

3) If string value with path exists, query specified location for existence of product executable

4) If product executable exists, allow installer to proceed with installation - else abort with error message

RegKey: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Native Instruments\<PRODUCTNAME>]

StringValue: "InstallDir"="<DRIVELETTER>:\\<PATHTOAPPDIR>"

FileInAppDir: <PRODUCTNAME>.exe

Example FM8: If "InstallDir"="C:\\Program Files\\Native Instruments\\FM8" then that is where a file named FM8.exe must be present.

And thats pretty much it.

Notes

The RegKey MUST be made under LOCAL_MACHINE. It will not work if made under CURRENT_USER.

The file in the appdir does NOT have to be the actual product executable. A bogus exe like an empty textfile named like the product exe is enough.

Concrete example on how to run the FM8 1.1.1 update installer with no previous version installed:

1) Create folder-structure C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\FM8

2) Create an empty textfile in the FM8 folder, name it FM8.exe, save it

3) Paste the following text (without the dashes) into an empty textfile and save the file as updateunlock.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Native Instruments\FM8]
"InstallDir"="C:\\Program Files\\Native Instruments\\FM8"

------------------------------------------------------

4) Run updateunlock.reg to import regdata

5) Run the FM8 1.1.1 installer

(Note: For a different path, create the desired folder structure on the desired partition and adapt the path under "InstallDir" in regdata accordingly. If you do, keep in mind that you have to separate with double-backslashes.)

This works for all NI update installers, and like i said, the procedure can be easily automated by making a little custom installer with path-chooser that creates the regkey and the bogus exe based on wherever the user wants to install the product to.

Better than adding an extra 176MB to the download just to accomplish the same thing.

OK, boys and girls, heres the news.... Heres is what I did to solve this once and for all.

1. Realize NI synths take a WHILE to fully read a directory full of presets... and this is just what I did to fix everything, you can follow this, or skip steps, but if you skip, i cant vouch it will work for you.

2. First off make sure you have converted to the new format.... nmsv.. this is done using the command in Massive File > Options > KSD Batch Convert.

3. Take all your presets and put them in a single folder, It doesnt matter if they are categorized into folders as the 'bank' they belong to is coded into the preset itself... for example, I now have all 3,761 presets of mine in the same folder, this also lets you find duplicates and delete them.

5. Place this single folder in..C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Native Instruments\Massive\Sounds remove anything else that may be in that folder.

6. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Native Instruments\Massive\Sounds and delete any folders of presets.

7. Go to C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Native Instruments\Massive folder and delete the existing NIMassiveDatabase2_ul database file

8. Open Massive, go to File > Options > Browser Tab and click Rebuild DB.

Lastly, and most important... WALK AWAY... leave it for an hour or so, I left it all night... while it rebuilds the database.

Once you have done this, you will have no more problems with slow loading , or circular 'wait' animations.

Tip, its MUCH quicker if you narrow down the presets by choosing some 'type' parameters in the browser.

I'm having another crack at this i dont think i did it right last time

I still would like folders though so i know what old and whats new

does it work if i still have folders?

XP folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My Documents\Native Instruments\Shared Content\Sounds\Massive

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Native Instruments\Massive\Sounds

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Native Instruments\Massive

also when i start massive it says it will rebuild the database,
So i still have to click file options rebuild database?

dubstep will be over by the time i ever get massive to work
