    (new)no longer needed(new)

(old)Some of my songs seem to sound familiar and before I continue them I'd like to make sure they are not already made.

At the moment I don't have any songs that need this question. Will post them if I ever get any again.

Yeah I get that feeling a lot because as much as people will deny it we get a lot of our ideas and inspiration from music we listen to.

I remember writing a short battle theme demo song that sounded so awesome but the melody sounded like it belonged to a game already. A few days later when I was listening to one of the Final Fantasy soundtracks that I have I came across a song with the EXACT first part of the melody I thought I came up with on my own. Funny thing is that was the second time, if not the first time, that I listened to that song. I don't recall listening to it before. I was sad, to say the least.

Well I guess with all the music out there now it would be hard not to copy something of some sort.

*In simba voice* "It's the circle of liiiiifffeee".

As a musician it's impossible not to render a jam without knocking a previously made melody. The key is the spin/originality you put on your tune i think. A original track is like a musician's fingerprint. Everybody has a hand(well for the most part), but everyone has a different fingerprint. Just keep your fingerprints fancy and you'll always have the uper-hand.

    Lol...i love analogies btw.

Dont sweat it.. happens to all of us...Your probably using very simplistic, common chord progressions or copying\emulating musical techniques from music u listen to.

Do ur music.. worry about it only when someone sues u... or.. try to push ur imagination and talent more. :grooves:

If you ask me, 99% of any song from any sub-genre of EDM sound almost exactly the same. LOL. Naw, not that much but in all honesty the majority sounds ridiculously similar. Part of the reason for that is all the "EDM" oriented preset packs, are essentially the same exact sounds. Thats why I don't understand why the overwhelming majority of soundbanks posted on Audioz, are for EDM. There really shouldn't be more than maybe 2 banks per sub-genre because the rest pf the banks are exactly the same with a knob tweaked here or there.

With rap music, I'm sick & tired of all the "Trap" shit. Same worn out brass sounds with the same exact snare & hat rolls. Same synth presets that come from the same exact banks as the EDM sounds. Every sample/loop pack is basically the same shit. Just like the soundbanks for EDM. Same repeatitive shit, over and over.

That argument is sort of moot because if you go deep into that thought you'll keep going back in time and you'll ultimately end up realizing that everything was, well you know, inspired by everything. You could go on for days identifying music within music within other music, but that would be redonkulous because it wouldn't get you closer to any sort of solid truth in your path as a musician, composer, producer, songwriter, or mixing engineer.

In other words...................WHAT GERALD SAID!!!

    @ chopin4525,

    !?! :wow:

Personally, I have 12 notes within each of my Octaves ! *yes*
(using the traditional 'Western Music' scale).

and even if the '#' (sharp) and 'b' (flat) intervals are not considered as Full notes by some, anyway they all lead to the possibility to create Chord Progressions, Scales,... so !

    @ Kyle379,

A simple suggestion (if not already done, or tried !) : Try to become more 'modal', either in your compositions, or in your improvisations... and you'll see (and hear !) that your music/creations may become a bit more 'original', or at least sound a bit different with quite different musical colors...

Theory, my friend, theory. The twelve notes progression is known as the chromatic scale. The natural diatonic scale counts 8 notes: C,D,E,F,G,A,B and C (the octave above). Sharp and flats are used when you need to respect the semitones placement when using other keys. Don't know if this is true also in the english speaking world but each note is also known as grade so:
    1° C
    2° D
    3° E
    4° F
    5° G
    6° A
    7° B
    8° C2

And there are 7 or 8 (if you count the octave or not). In fact you also have seven intervals. *yes*

    Read about Harry Partch:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Partch

If there were ever a soldier for original music, it was Mr. Partch.

Also, you might want to get used to the fact that everything is a collaboration and that your song was not "all you" as most people tend to believe. You couldn't make your songs if it were not for instrument manufacturers, PC builders, electricity, microphone companies, music retailers.... you get the point. Original ideas are only seen by shorted sighted egos. Besides, it goes well beyond how many semitones we divide the octave by. What about time signature? What about the back beat? All the ubiquitous things that we take for granted.

There are two methods I have found that create the illusion of originality:

    1. A lucky mistake that you were able to record and duplicate (which still may only seem original to you)

    2. Mask the idea that you are copying to a point that it is extremely unlikely that someone will know where it came from.

We all make that subconscious duplication of other works of art - we are products of our environment. The word "original" is like saying "perfect" - it is an ideal to keep striving for, and it makes us better as humans.
