Well, they can be a good starting point for people like me who are just hobby-musicians.

 

Simpler, more effective and funnier: use your ears, tweak the band knob up and down, left & right, that's all.

It could be a good starting point if you use the same sounds in the same arrangement, but I doubt it's your case.

 

I have a bunch of cue points you can use in any of your tracks </sarcasm>

They cannot, unless anything you're EQing has a very similar timbre and was recorded in a very similar conditions to whatever's the preset was designed for,
There is one way specifically Pro-Q 3 presets can actually work as, namely dynamics stuff on Auto with no static EQing, because of its clever Auto algorithm. That's it.
Oh, and DC offset filter, I guess.

 

Yes but even fabfilter gives you some factory presets to go and play around with them.
Again EQ is very specific to experience, more the experience, more you will able to do it with ears
but beginner's need that starting point to get along and experiment.

 

A bunch of the "presets" in Pro-Q3 and others, are setup for some specific type or purpose. They will have multiple nodes all along the 0 axis. They are just time savers. Every track with an eq needs it's eq adjusted precisely, but a Tuba preset is going to ballpark 2 of them.

If the whole "I never use presets" was worth some kind of additional respect (which is all it begs for anyway), no established mixers would ever use them or make them and contribute them to developers' plugins. If Dave Pensado,etc. can make use of something, it's likely good enough for me. I don't think anyone's clients would think too highly having to watch someone make a complex EQ instances settings, using up 15+ minutes of studio time they are paying for.

i think EQ presets sometimes sound ok depending on the instrument and what you are going for.
i've seem lot of people use presets from CLA and other mixers working fine, usually with a few adjustments

but i've also downloaded a few EQ presets that are snake oil (that streaky guy on youtube being one)
