Ok I spent $100 on a 3gb sapphire 7950.. was this a good purchase? its going to out perform my previous 7770 for sure tho

im sure ill be happy with it

 

if you looked around a bit and saved a little more you could of got a 960 or 970 used

you could of got a amd 300 series for that price as that would of future proofed you better for things like dx 12 and vulkan

 

keep in mind im going from a 7770 to a 7950, that is a pretty good jump and ill be happy. ;)

i couldn't find any good deals on used dx 12 cards.. it was at least 150-200 cad.

if i had $230 i would get a new GTX 1050 Ti FTW ACX 3.0 but im broke lol.. but even then apparently the performance for older games which i like to play like the half life series, unreal tournament 3 etc.. is not that much different (1050 ti is a bit better) than a 7950.

 

R9 series is pretty "cheap" too and even more effective than 7XXX series, an R9 270DX is at 140 euros right now, and perform so much better than old serie 7!

the 7950 still holds its own.. and certainly will perform good on the old 1998-2012 games i like to play. new games pretty much suck anyway. a direct x 12 card would be nice for increased windows 10 performance tho.

 

as they've stopped doing driver support now for older cards

yes i know it was released in 2016, and there are a few exceptions i suppose.

the amd crimson 17.1.1 works with my 7770, of course it is old outdated tech with only direct x 11.2

UPDATE : Im fucked. kijiji add was fake and i lost $100 CAD. he or more like they refused to answer any of my emails in 4 days -____- im so bummed out right now, so im still in the market for a REAL 7950, you see i purchased this card via an interac transfer and seller refused pay pal so i thought nothing of it..and for all i know they hijacked the account and i funded boko haram or something, so if anyone trustworthy wants to give a deal im still looking

Damn, sorry for your loss. I also fell into a trap of a cheap GTX750ti and didn't get card or money back.
7950 might experience issues running older titles pre-2004, as most today's gfx.
Your best bet for maximum compatibility with older games would be a card from that era, say Radeon 9600 combined with P4 and 1-2GB RAM as a separate PC/laptop build.

I'd get GTX1050Ti for desktop use (and games from 2005-present) and Radeon 9600 Mobile inside IBM T42 for games from 1996-2004, as T42 can still run 98SE, which 7950 might have issues with.

ive also looked at that very card the 1050ti and the memory bandwidth etc.. is way lower than the 7950 or 7970. and its not 384 bit only 128 bit.

ill actually mostly be playing 2004+ titles actually but there are a few select older incompatible with windows 10 titles i do like to play occasionally but i have an old amd 3400 2 gigs ram and hd 3850 computer for that

Memory bandwidth is a complicated subject and one shouldn't compare bits for bits and conclude 128bits in GP107 is automatically inferior to 384bit for 7950 or 256bit for 10-year-old GT 8800.
Even GTX1080Ti cannot fully utilize PCIe x16 bandwidth.

However in contrast to 1050ti, 7950 may come with WinXP drivers, which could be advantageous.

 

Ok, so my dad lent me the $286 cad (tax and shipping included in that price) to get the Sapphire Nitro RX 470 OC card. He must of felt sorry for me that i lost 100 bucks and i can pay him a payment of 100 a month untill its payed off.

Hopefully it will blow my old (and crappy) diamond 7770 out of the water.
