POKEY (Used in 400/800 series computer and Arcades):

SN76489AN (and its SN76496 SN94624N predecessor) (Used in the ColecoVision, SMS, BBC, TI, PCjr, Tandy and Arcades, that leaves very few):

• Basic and RAW, the purest chip there is.
• Different NOISE patterns for all variants, all emulated.

SID (including 6580 and 8580) (Used in the C64):

• The most important sound chip of the '80s gaming era.
• Variable Pulsewidth, SAW, Triangle, 8bit noise and even combined waveforms.
• Most waveforms are actually SAMPLES of the real thing for 100% accuracy, especially for the combined waveforms.

VIC-I (Used in the VIC20):

• This chip is very underestimated gem with totally unique sounding waveforms.
• Newly discovered "Robotic" waveforms are emulated.
• Rough, nasty noise pattern too.

I've used this quite a bit recently and it's indeed very good! I often gripe about devs adding new features to classic emulations, but I think this balances it well. It sounds very close to the original, and the additions increase it's usability but do not detract from the character of a real 106.

Also it's very light on resources, and very "responsive". Great value for money as well, it's around 40$ normally but it's often on sale, like, right now for 25$.

 

Isn't it time for the original list to be updated?

 

GUI doesn't make the sound so stop linking big shiny pics rather than specs.

I feel Arturia makes some excellent ones. I actually bought their Mini V, and also have their Prophet and Mod V. Very good. Omnisphere now has hardware integration with some original waveforms of many original synths, not sure if that fits your bill, but the Omnisphere 2.5 demo on Youtube gives some fantastic examples.

Hello everybody,

I'm new on this forum, but a bit known on KVR and Audiofanzine (always with the same nickname) since around 2010. I'm an old biologist of the wildlife, now retired, and hobbyist musician since my childhood in the 60's.

For the moment I just have a very simple question: hum... is the OP of this thread... still alive?
I ask this question because it seems that it's been a very long while that the original post hasn't been updated for the last time... and on his own blog there isn't any more activity since 2017, now five years ago. In this OP there are many new (and some forgotten old goody) emulations which could be added.

It would be great to have a spreadsheet of these.
I have my own and culled info from a couple of places. I don't know the best layout, but in my own i limited it a couple of ways, leaving out Reactor-based EMUs, and ones that seemed to be old and supplanted by better ones.

Anyway, having a spreadsheet that could be linked / updated seems good, but who would manage it?
A Google or other account could be created and might serve this and other uses.
Is there already a built-in ability for this?

 

I'm currently writing the draft of a post for a new thread. It is a bit long to write because I develop the descriptions, I add logos to specify on which platforms each item works, I add also a logo to specify whether an item is simple enough for beginners, I'll specify whether the plugin is a true emulation or a simulation or just "inspired by" of a hardware, etc. And all these items MUST be modern plugins, compiled at least in 64-bit, and almost all being still available today in 2022 on their developer's websites, and all these plugins will be freeware. I also give the direct link to the webpage for them all. And for the rare plugins whose website is dead very recently (this year of last year for example) it will be links to my own webspace, direct links to download them, with always the very last versions.

For the moment my draft, written directly in BBcode with a developer's tool, contains plugins (instruments and effects) from 50 developers. I think it will be finished within the next days with about 70 developers.

Then I'll make another similar list but for emulations exclusively, being freeware or payware as well.
