After some guy named No Avenger kept saying that my guitars aren't spread out enough I now pan them far enough apart to placate him...probably.

I use Sonalksis Stereo Tools, FabFilter - R3 (Reverb) and FabFilter - Timeless (Delay) for great sound.

Mathew Lane DrMS is seriously good at subtly enhancing that magic width and depth.
Works on individual stereo tracks, busses and master.

You can of course use synthesizers for pad sound max 75% after mishaps. Pan L 75 / Pan R 75.

Best way, for me at least, is to keep the foundation of the original sound in the middle - when it is mono'ish - and send it to a bus with a delay (EchoBoy for example) and the right - mostly short - delay settings. In several cases you can add a second bus send to a chorus (a lot of choices). And of course, reverb. I hardly prefer widening on the channel itself, however, multiband processing like iZotope Ozone Imager is the right choice for a mix bus. And don't let's forget panning or M/S. But at the end, there are a lot of different ways to achieve similar results. It's just what works best for a particular sound. Vocals for example can also be duplicated several times with each a different panning setting and/or pitch.

S1 is based on recognized engineering principles and does not purport to create a three-dimensional soundfield from a two-loudspeaker system or to create a pseudostereo master from a mono source. Because S1 is based on established audio engineering principles, it offers a high level of mono compatibility with minimal side effects.

so anyone send stuff that needs widening to a dedicated spreading bus with various stuff on it except the actual steroizer/windener before everything hits the master?

    Double-tracking and counter-panning (or LCR).
    Microshift.
    Haas.
    Multiband-panning (great for mono-compatibility).
Reamping (real spaces or speaker, in stereo).

For the very Subtle Mastering stuff I like Ozone's Imager.. (note it's Multiband)

In the double-tracking from mono subtopic, I used Brainworx's bx shred spread and it's useful for guitars.
But then I tried ADT by Airwindows and it blew sockets off.
First plugin I used by him. I was like "shit this doesn't even have a GUI but sure sounds better than the fancy shred spread".
