I seriously doubt that heroin or any other drug caused his untimely death. But, then again, "speculation" is always rife when someone (especially someone as famous as Prince) unexpectedly dies. I'd rather wait and see...

The only time I saw him was for the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics. Cant remember the year though. It was a free show and he did three songs.

I come from a strong hardcore punk rock background with a serious disdain for pretty much everything "popular". Regardless of all of that, I've always thought that Prince was one Bad Mutha', and he most definitely was.

Unbelievable. Listen to the music from Prince and David Bowie since over 30 years. And the music was a part of my live.

    Best live act ever.

I first saw him in London 1986, Parade tour. I saw several other shows and even got into one of the famous after-gig shindigs, at which I was stood next to some bloke from baywatch (lol) whilst Prince played a 2 hr set about 6 feet away from me.

He never topped the Purple Rain and rock-guitar period imo. "Computer Blue" is bliss whereas most everything after Parade is pretty iffy, though I still went to see him, so good was he.

I doubt any drug overdose (if it was that) would be recreational. More likely painkillers (for his hips? Or even complications of Dwarfism (he was 5' 2" - a dwarf?) Or AIDS, which sounds plausible. He was supposedly a super healthy vegan, no alcohol, no drugs.

    No one gets out alive.

    Here and there.

We don't know it...for sure right now. But remember how many stars died because of drugs use/abuse.
The fact that they can easily afford it to buy drugs doesn't make them immortal!
What makes me perplex is that Prince tried to control his content, videos, music etc. against the
*Elite*, the big bosses of entertainment and record industries and had to resort to draconian methods
in order to protect/control his work, business.

Same show I saw then? And the same show that's in the film made on his birthday, in Detroit. You've seen that?

It's still easily the greatest thing I've ever seen. And, clearly, everybody else there felt the same. Nobody would leave despite two encores.

Everything was so tight and yet seemed so loose. How could one ever do more to fill a moment? And to sustain it over hours......

He raised the bar for me about what it is to be a human. Bob Marley too, though sadly I never saw him.

BTW - anybody ever noticed that The Bangles' Manic Monday is exactly the same song as 1999? Nice work if you can get it :D

---I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray..............

---Six o clock already I was just in the middle of a dream.........

---But when I woke up this mornin', could've sworn it was judgement day

---I was kissin Valentino by a crystal Italian stream

    It's the same song?

I really did not care for him that much when he first came out, but now I can totally respect him. RIP really sad to hear this news.

Under his soubriquet of Christopher? I know.

I mean listen to them! Try singing the lyrics of the one to the other?

    It's the same song.

Why is that? I'm interested because I loved him when I came across him (1999 purple rain) and grew to dislike his stuff (I thought he needed someone else to produce, but as Steven Berkoff supposedly said of Prince's film-directing abilities, "Who can tell a star?") For one thing it all became about his being Prince whereas the earlier stuff was more normal. Like screwing your sister.......lol

What earned your respect? His longevity? No-one can fake it that long? ;)

Personally I feel he never lived up to my expectation - Around The World In a Day was nice but failed to continue the parabola of increasing brilliance. Parade was patchy, Sign o the Times even more so. And it was downhill from there, recording-wise. Sales attest to that, somewhat?

But his deal was the live thing. His touring itinerary is astonishing, especially with the after-gig stuff......and recording and everything else too. Perhaps that's what you now respect?

I agree with your above quote. The exploitation of artists by these elephantine corporations (historically) is legendary. Any creative and self-respecting musician should take all steps necessary to protect the integrity (and most importantly) "control" of his/her work. Prince's protracted battles with Warner Brothers is well-known. His "draconian" methods were absolutely necessary. If you will, a David vs Goliath battle. Nonetheless, in the end, Prince (rightfully) regained control of his music catalog. Other musicians have used his example to great success in similar circumstances. I can't say enough about this man and his commitment to, not only musical excellence, but for his staunch perseverance in ultimately being the master of his own music.

Nobody need do this any more (if they ever did).

I loved Radiohead's thing on reproduced lyrics......where it says "lyrics reproduced by kind permission of XYZ publishing......even though we wrote the fucking lyrics!"
