    Hey guys,

Anyone know any good resources (books, CD's, DVD's etc) for learning to fluently sight read? I'd love to be one of those guys who can almost immediately translate a piece of sheet music into sound via their instrument.

I'm currently doing ABRSM piano grades, and being a guitar player for about a decade now, dexterity has never been a problem. For me the biggest challenge lies in the actual sight reading.

So if anyones got any advice or learning recourses they found useful when learning to sight read I'd love to hear from you.

    Many thanks!

that can only be achieved with practice
i used to just read sheets everywhere :))
just to get it into my mind.. you don't even need to be near your keyboard.. just read, read and read. then practice.

    no other way... sorry :dunno:

I teach music part time both privately and in a School ABRSM grades and like someone else said it comes with practice.
Use the specimen grade sight reading book to improve your sight reading don't try and get everything right at once first get the notes right then work on timing and lastly dynamics and when playing the piano don't look at your hands always look at the music.

talking books, i can recommend Carl Czerny's exercises.
    Code:

you should be able to find some in any music store.

i'd say it's the best exercises, and they worked for me very well.

I probably was a little vague in my question, but I totally understand that sight reading can only come with vast practise. I was just wondering whether there are any particularly good books/resources that people might recommend for further study.

But thank you for all the advice! And thanks SAiNT I'll definitely try to get hold of those exercises.

Google: Sam Most; the transformation of the jazz solo.
That was the most helpful book to me.
Bought it a very long time ago and still use it to update my reading chops.
Because of the structure of the book, you´ll learn to recognize things pretty fast.
Another tip might be is, that reading music is like driving a car ; always look ahead, not to what´s right in front of you...
    Anticipation takes practise...
    And there are 2 ways of reading music;
Learning your parts and prima vista.
Whilst learning your part, you read/play very slowly, without making any mistake.
With prima vista that doesn´t matter.
    Cheers !
