Learn guitar at 50? When you already have an extensive musical background? Heck yeah, piece of cake. Playing basic journeyman guitar is, imho, fairly easy. Now yeah, if you want to be a virtuoso that's a different story but just get around the instrument- dive in, have fun!

No, it's the Killer Rabbit that will get you. That's why I only use Martin Monel strings on my acoustic guitars...rabbits have a nickel allergy and won't go near the stuff.

StormChaser, heed my warning or suffer the wrath

Keith Richards didn't start playing until he was 57 back in 1961.

I have seen a few of them and was like wow, if only. There are a couple of younglings on TikTok that pop up playing all kinds of tunes on the guitar, totally amazing being so young yet so talented.

    Thanks dude.

The Jupiter 8 was fab, if only I knew back then how much they would be worth today and how sort after they are I would have never swapped it for a Commodore Amiga 500 and Monitor, Silly impatient kid that I was I didnt want to wait till Christmas to get the Amiga so thats what I did. Lets just say my parents were not very happy at all.

Haha I dont think I will be joining a band anytime soon, maybe I will start my own called The Geriatrics :)

I was thinking last night that I need to be realistic in that this might not actually be for me BUT if I dont give it a good go, I will never know. I would rather look back and tell myself I tried, then for another 2 or 10 years to pass quickly and have regrets for not trying.

    My personal( 60 , playing since 15) recommendations :

-Get a human teacher. face to face.
-also get an (additional) spanish guitar ( nylonstring)
-start with learning the basic chords in basic position ( Emin, Amaj, Dmaj a.s.o)
-yes-your fingertips will hurt. don´t stop . maybe ease up , but continue.
    - wait with Barre-chords ,untill u learned to grab the Emajor and Amajor in the basic position without your pointing finger.
-practice switching between them.Just chord-strumming. Later practice rythmpatterns with righthand.
    - with 4 chords learned ...You can play a lot of songs out there!
-play and sing ! - for yourself. Or together with a friend.
-Enjoy your progress , dont do too much new things , (frustration) ,until the basics gets flowing.

I remember beeing 16 , sitting with a spanish guitar in a group of 4 plus the teacher and all playin "Let´s twist again"
and yelling that out , until the strings bursted. It had something.

I got my guitar delivered just over and hour ago and wow the strings feel really thick and hard to press down, I keep touching the bottom string with the palm of my hand. I was like ouch and the tips of my fingers feel sore already just from the messing I have done. I was going to ask should I use some sort of slinky strings to start off with, I will order some of these now.

I am guessing its not too difficult to swap out strings myself? probably a stupid questions and I am sorry for asking but do I keep the old strings or once they have been taken off I just throw them away, sorry noobie question I know :)

Hey thank you for sharing that.

If you ever want to jam with other musicians online have a look at something called Ninjam or JamTaba its amazing you just link your audio interface up and jam online (all free) with other musicians, you get 7 people per room its really good fun.

There is a guy who's only instrument is a cardboard box and drum sticks but it sounds great, its all music. All different styles and different abilities.

    thank you very much.

I am going to take it slow as I said earlier I know I am not going to be the next Yngwie but if I could just put simple guitar solos to my music that would be the goal for me. I play synth guitar which I love, funny think I always get asked what guitar and effects am I playing they ate shocked when I tell them its actually a synth. There are some guitarist who can tell its not a really guitar but they do say its sounds authentic. I just want to be able to do it for real on the real instrument.

Thank you Beetlejuice I have copied your text in to my notes app.

I will look in to a nylon guitar.

I was watching a video last night about a Yamaha TransAcoustic guitar, they sounded absolutely fab. I am considering ordering one of those just as an alternative. I never knew such a thing existed.
