    Laptop update of any use?

Hi. I am a pure enthusiast with no professional interests. Bear this in mind.

I am increasingly facing CPU spike issues with my Laptop set-up. Although I feel that I have optimised it to the max in various means and forms.

Hence, I was wondering if a change to a newer system would result in a real felt performance improvement?

    Current system
    Dell XPS/ i7 9750H/ 32 GB RAM

    Envisaged "new set-up" could be:
Dell XPS 9530 (prefer Dell because of its Thunderbold connections) Intel Core i7-13700H/ 32 GB RAM

Also - any chance I could just swap the ssd's in order to not having to start from scratch?

    Thanks

It depends. If the SSD is your System Disk, it will usually not work to just stick the old disk into the new machine. But you could put the SSD from the old machine into an external enclosure.

But it will be faster and more optimized, certainly. 8 more cores and 8 more threads. You will notice it. Everything will be higher specs. Will it help with your CPU spikes? Maybe. You'd have to figure out what is really causing that problem to be certain. I'd go with "probably" until you figure out the source of the spiking.

What system are we talking about? If it is Windows, well it may work. I did not try this will all my systems, but once when I got a new laptop, I put my drive with Windows 7 into the new computer, and in spite of that you can read everywhere that such things don't work, it booted up, loaded Windows, installed corresponding drivers, and it worked like a charm, and oddly asked no reactivation (I had legit OEM Windows license). The two computers were not the same series, however they were both HP. I am not sure if this contributed to that. Activationwise it can be difficult to tell, maybe some programs would detect you changed computer, maybe not. I don't know. But this is how it worked for me, so you need to try. I cannot take responsibility for loosing any activation if you try though, so do it at your own risk, but based on my experiences, I would not give a damn and would try if I had to do it for myself. Maybe it only worked like that earlier, now in Windows 11 it is different...I don't know.

What DAW would you be using? Most DAWs only use performance cores, and you have 6 performance cores to use with that laptop.
