I have been out of the Kontakt arena since 2014.

Trying to get my mind around Kontakt 6; while checking out some of the releases on the sister-site, I couldn't find any team's release; there were bunch of Portable, no-install, and SymLink.

    Are the teams' release removed?

What's the difference b/w those versions (Portable, no-install, and SymLink)? Would you recommend to go for a reliable team's release?

Which one is more reliable and easier to keep up-to-date as far as the Kontakt version goes and to add libraries (non-legit & legit)?

    Cheers.

I am using Kontakt.6.0.3.Portable from 2018.12.30. The portable versions are nice.
I was using 5.8 and it is still installed, but I don't really use it anymore since I began using the portables.
I use lots of other portable programs even though I do not carry them around on a flash drive or anything, but I do run 2 computers a lot and it is nice to just copy over the folder and have everything set already.

Oh, sorry ... I should qualify my choice.
I have no idea about legit. All the libraries I have are from sister site.
I use Quickload and do not often look at the "Library" tab.
Many of them were added to the Library tab fine, many the "Add Lbrary.exe" could not find a library, but either way, they all load fine, and I access them from the Quickload directory I set up.
If you have not used Quickload, check it out. really helps when you ave a lot of libraries.

This is interesting, thank you DoubleTake for the explanation. Does this work for every single library? I mean, are there libraries which somehow require you to load them from the library tab or which have features that are only available upon load from the library tab, or can you always access every feature by just using the file browser in order to load the nki files directly (and then dragging these nki files into the quickload menu)?

PS: I have another question. Some people mentioned in one of the ver. 5 releases (I think it was 5.8 or 5.81) that the portable Kontakt tries to access the internet in a way, and that it won't work if you won't disable your firewall or something like that. Is this still the case with the ver. 6 portable version?

So, people prefer portable over Symlink? Interesting.

None of the ones I have require the Library tab, and i do not think any actually do. Some are required to be installed, and I do recall having a problem getting some installed with some version of Kontakt, but can't remember which version or libraries.
Every function is available, so long as the library is intact.
Some libraries (modified to reduce size by removing distant mics samples for example) may have instruments saved with the sample path pointing to outside the sample folder (to some temp directory on the person's drive where he was working on them , for example)
If you find missing samples you can usually do a "batch re-save", browse to the actual folder and fix them.
You can make your own Quickload folder setup. (on normal versions it is usually "C:\Users\xxUSERNAMExx\AppData\Local\Native Instruments\Kontakt 5\QuickLoad" - On portable "...\USERDATA\Kontakt\Quickload")
I have everything in all my libraries categorized in there because it seemed more "normal" to me.
Some people might like to operate out of the Library tab and just keep their favorites and/or ones they have modified in Quickload.
I tend to drag the whole "Instruments" folder into my main Quickload folder category, rename it to the library name (instead of "instruments") and then move some folders from there... it depends on the library as some have just one instrument, some have the different articulations or instruments in efficiently placed and named folders already, and some have excessive subfolders or some articulations I will use a lot & I move them one column to the left.
I don't keep the left pane open much except when dragging to the Quickload or for files reference in my drive's Daw Library\Kontakt folder.
Remember you can also do this with multis. Since there are some libraries with multis and some without, I just search my Kontakt Libraries folder for "*.mult" files. Most are in folders named "Multis", but some do not, so i search for the files.
I think most people wold a least want to make some category folders. I made a bunch, and numbers at the beginning makes it easy to reorder them as you like.

Oh, PS to your PS... I heard about that call home thing but can't remember. I use "Windows Firewall Control" which makes it easy. Some 3rd part Firewall manager is a big help ..I remember it took me so long to manually add everything to my "blocked" setting using the default firewall in Win7.

Within the portable main folder Mine is: "...\Kontakt6Portable\UserData\Kontakt\Quickload\"
    There are "kontaktdb2_56" & "kontaktdb2_56Lock" files in "...\Kontakt6Portable\UserData\Kontakt\Db\",
if those are the ones you mean, bt there are some ".db" files too..just do a search :)

    Well ....its complicated ,
I use Kontakt Portable 6.0.3 and not all libraries work for some reason, and installing R2R's Library / XML Keygen doesnt activate some Libraries properly, just had a problem with LASS scoring strings cause it said "This Library belongs to a other library that isnt currently insalled" or sum , well, thing is, when you use the portable , there are no XML's generated (wich is a good thing) but you need them it appears,
Other than that, Kontakt 6.0.3 Portable is the best Version imho, Organizing Libraries is a breeze (Always add them by manual adding them ,its the last of 3 Methods)

Thank you very much DoubleTake and PrettyPurdie. Very interesting feedback. So it looks like most libraries should work fine but some individual ones might not work properly because they need to be added first before Kontakt will even load the .nki files properly. It's still kind of a gamble but it also looks like a lot of people are pleased with the 6.0.3 portable version so far.

yeah , the only downside of using Kontakt Portable is, if it doesnt install your GO TO Library , so you maybe need to get friends with a diffrent string library :)

Hey Guys, I'm new to this forum.
From where do you get the files and instructions to get kontakt with the libraries working?
I don't need the portable version

Kontakt Portable works for me. Especially, because I don't need to redo my DAW template in case I change my computer.

    It's not that complicated
You do not need any KG
Simply add your libs via lib manager

Some libraries add wallpaper to lib tab but does not load (eg eDNA from Spitfire Audio)
And Kontakt say: "this library must be added first .... "
This is because the lib code (spnid) is not added properly in Kontakt's internal guts ;-)

In this case come here and well be glad to give you the proper code and the howto. (really easy, even me was able to do it )

Downloaded Ilya efimov TC Electric from the sister site, but Kontakt 6.0.3 portable doesn't recognize it.

Have you gotten any solutions mate?

I just agonized for HOURS & DAYS trying to figure this one out, but VOILA!! I have the portable version 6.0.2 or something like that. There are some libraries that the portable just WILL NOT Load right on its own after you try to add an unencoded Library. I found that mostly I dont need the nicnt files, but for the ones that say "This Library belongs to a......." This is the one that you want to attempt to let Kontakt search for by going to Library Manager and click "Add" .. Then tick on the first selection "Add encoded Library (auto detection) then direct it to the folder that has all the Library info ie: "My Documents/MusicShit/ScoringStrings.... . This has worked for EVERY LAST Library so far that gave me that issue. We just get so used to adding the Library Manually that we forget to let it try to auto detect.
