Is this more a question of finding the holy grail? A lot of music has slightly different audio characteristics (EDM to jazz to classical) so I do question why tuning ones headphones into just one specific make and model is the correct way forward - no matter how awesome they are.

There is a potential to hear via tunnel vision (and what a wonderful oxymoron that is - lol) and hear music 'tuned' in too much via pure electronics and algorithms. It would be (as I see it) only being able to drive a car with one type of tyres on one type of road surface under one type of weather condition. I don't believe that does anyone any good. You may find listing and working on a variety of cans (even not the best ones - I use DT100 and they are soooooo old!) will result in you hearing other hitherto 'unheard' frequencies - you never know, you may find a unique sound of your own. I feel I get good results because I listen in closely, I don't expect the cans to do all the work. I suppose that's why we all need to rest our ears after a prolonged session.

Anyway, this is my two penneth, I hope you find what works for you, whatever that is, I only suggest you don't regard all this tech as the magic bullet to all your woes.

    Good luck.

You are so right about that. The 650-ties are more for hifi listening. Since most shops have both you can do your comparison.

I will use the headphones for hi-fi listening 75% of the time or more. I use closed-back headphones for tracking. From my understanding, the Sonarworks plugin will change the frequency response of both the HD650 and the HD600. So I am just trying to ascertain what the difference will be between the HD650 and HD600 post Sonarworks. I am trying to kill two birds with one stone here, if you know what I mean. Obviously if the plugin does not work well, then the HD600 will be the preferred choice for mixing

So I waited a bit before getting it but since there is a promo going on with 20% off the regular 99$ price for refernce tool headphone, I just bought it. This is the promo code APR16-20HP to use on checkout .I don't know until when it lasts, it says on the email I got today until the 30th of March, but I just used it and it works so it's probably until the 30th of April. Cheers.
