I listened to the Crusaders (Joe Sample) a lot. It was back in the day when electric instruments and funk were still relatively new to "jazz". Had not thought about their music much lately until I saw he had passed. Bittersweet to go back and listen to that stuff when someone who brought you so much inspiration and fun passes. The Houston area had a regional style that came out in Crusaders music. I hear lifted samples from Sample and crew often. And how does a drummer get a nickname as cool as "Stix" Hooper?----- Really, is there a better piece of pure sugar coated pop confection than Bob Crewe"s "You're Just Too Good to Be True"? I have a love for some of that almost "Bubblegum" 60"s pop. Thank you gentlemen, whereverer your spirits are now.
