Bias runs through everyone's veins, huh? In some subtle or overt kinda way. Since it's all opinion (turn into fact, nowadays) I'll throw my cheap, two cents in. Reaper is boring, and dull. The MIDI editor is repulsive. Yes it is efficient, but I wouldn't create in that thing for anything. Pro Tools is the standard because it is the most widely used software to edit audio in the music/movie industry, not because it's the best. And by "industry", I mean major studios across the world. Not your home setup, your friend's setup, or mine. Secondly, the MIDI in Pro Tools isn't maximized, but it isn't as bad as people make it. It's better than Reapers, definitely. You have great producers, like 40, who does everything in PT and uses stock synths and FX, so creatively, it can be a tool for some.

A lot of us do this for passion...and income... and I've never gotten a Reaper file from any clients to mix yet. Whatever works for YOU works. YES, Avid has done and do ridiculous things, business and consumer wise, but stop investing so much hatred in something you don't use. There's no be-all-end-all.

 

There are many great replies here and all are valid. Thanks so far for not making this a my daw is better than yours thread! I don't want to bash any daw...certainly to each his own! The fact that Pro Tools is the industry standard doesn't necessarily make it the best daw yet it may be YOUR best daw. And as again for me it has become a question of stability as well as being cumbersome with the settings on my Focusrite Pro 40.

 

As other people wouldn't create anything in PT.

You don't need the project file to be able to mix a song as long as the client bounces and sends you the stems(which S1 does it on the fly).
If i would have to choose between PT and Reaper, i would choose Reaper all day, just because i don't want to get fat (as Sinewave truly described it )

That was one of my major points from moving from PT10 to Reaper.
I ran a test on my old laptop.

I made two very similar projects in PT and Reaper, Made the reaper project slightly more demanding and RAM heavy though.

From Project open to finished session load. Pro tools took around 2/3 mins. Reaper around 20/30 seconds.

Made my laptop feel super speed. I could run so many more VIs with no hassle. And whenever I did, I just had to freeze it, and ive freed up a huge chunk of ram and some cpu again.
The same process in protools means... Busing your instrument track to a Audio track and recording the audio track during playback of the instrument track. Very time consuming and motivation killing.

 

i have used legal and "not" so legal pro tools.

I used pro tools at school. I never had a trouble with crashing or running out of memory. It was pretty stable.

On the other hand.. the non-so legal version that used to work at home was terrible. It was 10.3xx or 10.4xx I forgot. It would constantly crash when putting a plugin or doing any change to the session.
I also had trouble using midi controllers because it would just freeze. I think it has to do with the i-lok.

I finish my pro tools class and i moved on.


Studio one > pro tools in my opinion.

Its pretty reliable if you're looking to record yourself.

I believe they charge a patent for developers to use RTAS/AAX.

Don't quote me on that.

 

AVID are bankrupt *yes*

Even if they are redeemed all AVID interfaces will be no longer compatible

such as done AVID with DIGIDESIGN .

Of more than they will change the AAX format in IYA format !

I really really like Reaper & Cubase
I also like Samplitude and Sequoia.

I dont like S1 so much but i only have finished one song with that DAW i didn´t like that it crashed when scaning plugins (well hmm so does Reaper and Cubase and most other DAW:s) but the scan took forever and it scan on every startup.
I also did not like the audio editor.
And that drag and drop "style"

In Samplitude it took forever to learn how everything was setup (it is the same with DP now)

I guess it is because i started with Cubase many many years ago that i like that DAW.

I also dig Sonar nowadays i did not when it was called Cakewalk

 

"SineWave" PT is great because it keeps you fed, caffeined, nicotined, alcoholised, THC-ed... due to all the waiting.

 

Cubase 5.1.1 november 2009 never had any problems with it.

What about Mixcraft? Do you have any thoughts about that daw?

 

It's an ok daw, but i personally wouldn't use it not even as a portable option on my daw for a long-road holiday. Even the Magix Music Maker seems more appealing than Mixcraft to me.
