You sum it up very well.

It's no wonder that Ono kept it in the closet for more than 40 years.

    Forgettable at best.

If you watch the "making of" video, you can see they separated the vocals from the original demo tape (like everyone of us can do with RipX or UVR nowadays). They even talk about "a software system developed by Peter Jackson and his team" and just show FabFilter Pro-Q 3 and some fancy studio...

Then they recorded new instrument tracks, string section and so on and used some recordings of George Harrison from the first attempt in the 90s.

The outcome of this is an overcompressed muddy mediocre mix of an uninteresting song. I'm sure there are some people on this forum who could do a better job.

But it's all about the names, like with so many audio hard- and software products, put the name "Abbey Road" on a rudimentary amp circuit and people think they need this to get instantly famous.

John and George are rolling over in their graves.
The last thing they would have wanted is a third rate demo cashing in on their legacy:(

Is this actually the last song or are those McCartney's legs I see sticking out of the barrel? I bet there's all kinds of stuff that one day when AI is capable enough it will be doing things like turning recordings of Ringo tapping a pen on a desk into full blown drum solos with his avatar sitting behind the kit. Reality will never be reality again.

GEORGE WAS RIGHT FOR ONCE!!! He said the other songs they tried during the Anthology sessions were rubbish… Ringo pretty much drove this song into the toilet. It’s literally just a straight boring beat. Nothing creative like “Come Together” “In My Life” or “Ticket to Ride” on his part. The entire song lacked any depth or contrast from verse, chorus & bridge. The guitar solo felt like a garnish of parsley that nobody cares about & tosses away… I’m actually shocked Paul & Ringo chose to move forward with this demo

McCartney did the solo in George's style actually. George is on there though.

I’ll argue the recent AI work done to “Grow Old With Me” beats “Now and Then “ by miles…

    Demo

    AI rework

It's custom software that included isolated Beatles recordings as part of the training data so the results would likely be better than other demixing software available at the time (and possibly now) for the specific task.

It wouldn't be hard to find the original demo and see if the isolated vocal is as clean as in the video using RipX etc.

What it really looks like is milking a cash cow, before even selling anything. The invoices for all this "Custom Programming of algorithms" would be interesting to see. Once the song is out the door, all those billable hours end.

How about all the early jazz and music hall records from the early 20th Century? I wonder if cleaning them up with AI will add to the magic or sanitise those songs.

I managed to download the original. It is less compressed than the YouTube version, but still too much.
    And clipped, of course.
