It doesnt have to be complicated, just original.

Every time i listen to this song i get a smile on my face.
Simple song, simple production yet so effective.
Just goes to tell you that great song writing is what made great artists in the first place.
One of the reasons this production sounds so well is also the reverb. That is what will eventually set you apart from the rest of the mediocre crowd, when you learn how to use the reverb to bring life to instruments.
Having Phil sing for you would be the other reason.:hillbilly:
    Anyone else loves this song?

of course i like it! it is a bit later than most of the hits i love, but it doesn't sound early 90s like basically all the other pops song that came out then. perhaps another reason why it is so great? it is a rarity by not sounding like another time stamp

    Is a great song
Like you say is simple and well produced. Good sound.
Think the fact that everyone can relate to it on a basic level makes it so accessible for a wide audience.
I can relate totally on the complete lack of dancing skill and that
He written a lot of great stuff.

I can't help it but Phil Colin's snare drums always sound like something people usually get slapped in the face with. Plus plate reverb.
One of the reasons I'm glad the 80s are over.

Loved this song as a kid, and still do. I also was quite fond of the video back in the palaeolithic days when MTV played music.

Wow! I didn't know composing music can be so easy. Why do I care at all?
    Praise my everlasting life!

@Gated snare sound: I was a total fan of it. When I bought my first FX unit, a DEP-5, I made sure it can to that gated reverb

If the song is good – the sound doesn't really matter. It's that simple, I believe.

Robert Johnson (born 1911 - died 1938) never used Cubase. Good songs, tho'.

for what I remember, the guitar player struggled a lot to find his guitar sound
thats not so "simple production" style, except for the arrangement

#3 in the forever 27 club. So sad.

Hope Sandoval aka Mazzy Star - still alive and I believe 27 when this was released.

The only thing that moves me more than drum and bass; guitar and strings.

Hmmm. I loved "Air Tonight" originally but I was homeless when he made a fortune and sang about homelessness: "oh, think twice, another day for you and me, you and me in paradise".

"No Phil, YOU. Another day for YOU in paradise, nobody else. Certainly not me! How dare you include me in your guilty apologia. Speak for yourself!!!"

I've never forgiven the cnut.

    It's only 30 years........don't say I can't hold a grudge.

You know he ripped off Sussudio or whatever that nonsense is called? And he eats babies. Probably.

    Thread closed, for decency. ;)

ETA: simplicity is really something, in all things.

honestly I never liked "I can't dance" maybe Mama is better for my tastes, of course
I ve never liked the Genesis, in any line up, as I never liked the biggest prog rock bands like Gentle Giant, King Crimson, and I m a prog rock collector (around 1800 bands by now, prog, space, art, kraut rock)

during the 80s many of the 70s bands tried to reinvent themselves for the new market, to me the Yes composed a good hit, representing their past heritage and its modern development:

  19. Owner is maybe the only song of their's that I don't like as a song as it is all tech and no heart. It is essentially mix driven.

The cheap synth fx`s dont help either.Didnt age that well, production wise.Song is good, though too formulaic for my taste.

mmm... now that was a nice piece.. of production  she's probably my favorite female artist...
I haven't checked ,but I really hope she wrote most of the lyrics to their songs.. all quite simple, but so evocative
don't hear much from her/Mazzy Star anymore... except for the odd show now and again..

he made it his trademark... when you hear that massive swat you know it's him... :winker:
