Things are pretty rough, especially in big cities. People hardly notice each other anymore and if they do, it's more as an obstacle. Everyone seems to be mainly preoccupied with themselves. Self-centeredness and selfishness are spreading. The cause: neoliberal competitive behavior is growing into everyday culture and making us increasingly lack solidarity. The media and advertising promote the egomaniacs, who gain too much influence.

I have spoken to many people affected in the public sector, in sport, in schools, in hospitals, with researchers and politicians. They all report how the egomaniacs are spreading. The problem is neglected in politics and the media. It is therefore high time to rethink and take countermeasures, both with a different policy and with each and every one of us. The lonely “egomaniac” as a prototype

Recommended guide for parents and a psychologically sound analysis of today's generation of children and young people by child psychologist Stephan Valentin By Barbara Tumfart

The term "egoists" is already defined in the Brothers Grimm dictionary with a quote from Jean Paul: "Egoist, egoist: however, the egoist enjoys the greatest degree of domestic happiness, namely his own." In his recent book, child psychologist Dr. Stephan Valentin analyzes today's generation of children and young people and emphasizes the fatal danger that the next generation is increasingly becoming such "egoists." Lacking any ability to work in a team, overwhelmed by the constant pressure to perform from parents, school, and society, the younger generation lacks the ability to integrate well and successfully into a group, to engage socially actively with peers, and to feel empathy and compassion for others.

But who is to blame for the plight of the growing generation? Is it the overly ambitious, support-obsessed parents who try to make up for the deprivations of their own childhood with their own offspring? Is it a relentlessly performance-oriented school system that offers the individual little time to develop important social skills and, through the massive use of grades and assessments, virtually pushes the individual student into the role of the selfish and ambitious loner? Or is it contemporary society itself, in which, as we all know, only the strongest survive, in which compassion, social and altruistic commitment are negatively valued as pure luxuries, and in which the monthly salary payment alone determines who is "successful" in life in the eyes of the majority?

According to Valentin, all of the above factors are crucial in determining how well and whether a child develops social skills and avoids pursuing the solitary path of the selfish egoist. While the author does not fundamentally reject or demonize computers, television, and new media in general, Valentin does recommend using them in a targeted, time-limited, and consciously positive way. As an enrichment alongside playing with peers, but never as a replacement for it. Valentin's book reads smoothly, is written simply, and without excessive technical vocabulary. It is a recommended guide for parents who are not only concerned about their children's grades, but also want to promote their offspring's social behavior and social skills.

Young generations will regret their actions one day (at best), but by then it will be too late and there will be no turning back for them. When they grow old and realize that their lives, with their stubbornness, have almost evanesced into darkness and there won't be any time left to make up for their past.
