I'm not prejudging, I'm just asking a question. I don't know what the average age of the members of this forum is, but let's assume it's over 20. And let's also assume that the new generation's average age is around 15 and maximum of 20. The question I have is, do you know the new generation? What are the needs of the new generation and do you try to fulfill their desires in your music? Is the music produced by the new generation appealing to you?

I work with plenty of young people and their music taste is diverse, plenty of them know stuff that dates way way back, so folks who are into some particular thing really know their stuff.

Some music I listened in their age doesn't appeal to me that much anymore, so their phase music is probably just as same thrash as mine, they will come back to it with some nostalgia, but ultimately write it off same as I did.

Honestly can't say I'm endlessly chasing new music every day or I'm really trying to cater to people with anything I do, there's tons of people making any kind of music these days, inspired by anything and everything, quality is top notch, they started doing it even earlier and have more resources at their disposal to make it even better and results show that. Plenty of them tackle same kinda nostalgia I like and do it really good with their own twist, dunno, if one isn't fixated on Billboard Top 100, there's plenty of everything for everyone.

I can safely say that my music does not appeal to ANY generation on this planet, old or young. That's why I can't wait for SETI to finally yield some positive results.

    > I'm around 60 and write about 17- to 25-year-olds <

As a musician and sound designer, I just do what I do best. I try to keep the instructions for my sound sets as simple as possible so that everyone can understand them, regardless of their level of education. I also make very simple basic sounds to represent the sound of the respective synthesizer and its capabilities. Anyone can ask me questions or write, and I almost always answer.

I often explain that some people jump to conclusions very quickly and often see the world in black and white. I then try to explain the shades of gray to people. I can't do much more than talk or write here anyway. Personal conversation is much more valuable and informative. So, people, ask and talk to adults in the real world.

Unfortunately, age is usually anonymous, and the countries the users come from also usually remain anonymous. How someone was socialized remains a mystery. I call them the weird generation. They grew up in a world where everything has already been invented. Every style of music already exists, and what's left for this generation to find their own identity: autotune and a strange, weird, dark bass.

Their hairstyles are also weird, and young people with beards act as if they were old and wise. This generation makes the music they want to hear. The lyrics are usually pretty flat and meaningless. Even the rap is copied and slightly altered to communicate something to the outside world. I think this generation has it very difficult – because everything has already been invented.

Unfortunately, the lack of education and the neglect of language are strongly reflected in their own new music. Experience shows that these young musicians are also getting older and wiser, and if they learn a little more, their music will also get better from their 30s onwards.

I don't particularly like the new egoists because they don't understand enough about life, and they want and need to gain their own experiences, just like every generation before them. Therefore, I wish all young people to read more and use their cell phones less.
With reading, language improves and becomes more expressive.

Go for a walk in the woods with a few friends without a cell phone!

There seems to be a major difference between the older generation and the current new generation. The older generation and the almost elderly generation spent a lot of time listening and learning, and later picked up instruments and made music. The previous generation were more listeners, and due to the lack of universal access to music-making tools, they tried to enjoy the music of older, more experienced people who had spent a long time making music. But the new generation has picked up instruments and is playing with them, before spending most of their lives listening to the musical works of great people. That is, before learning music, they start producing it? How is that possible? The reason for this is not too difficult because everyone has access to all kinds of musical instruments.
But is it the same in other fields? Can someone build a car before learning the engineering? Can someone become a surgeon before they have studied medicine and have access to surgical instruments? It is this tool that creates the illusion of productive power in a person.
If the tools for producing music are made available to people after they learn music, people will no longer create inferior things and this generational gap will not be created, because the gap in a field is created by tools.

Since a long time ago, I do not write music for humans: just for ghosts, aliens and robots (machines in general, intelligent or not).
If humans enjoy it, it is a plus, but they are certainly not my main target audience.

Maybe the new generation has similar thoughts in their minds and is making songs for them, new audiences. It's getting a little scary.

The mind stays young, but the body ages. We may look old, but we are young in spirit. This is due to music and the creative mind that enables us to make music or art. Remember, we were all young ourselves once. Rock music had already been invented, but techno, EDM, and EBM didn't exist yet. So there was something we could participate in, either as listeners or as creators, with the first Cubase from Steinberg.

The first PC came out in 1998, all very expensive and crashed frequently. Today's generation has many more musical devices, hardware, and software, at its disposal. The trick is to love what you do, and suffering is also part of music. Music is like nature – infinite plant and animal species; mood is like the weather, sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy. You should learn not to give up so easily, and problems must be solved.

Music is something unique; everything is easier with music. It connects people, and everyone understands it. Human creativity is infinite, but human life is finite. When you get older, you count the years you have left and what meaningful things you can still do, like preserving your music for posterity.

I bought a guitar at 17 and a book to learn from. Back then, there was no internet, only specialized magazines. You knew a few musicians from your circle of friends; the drummer would talk about his music or play something. If you wanted to buy a synthesizer, you asked someone who knew what they were talking about, and most of the tips were very good. Many music dealers were very intelligent and also had a musical soul.

We have two states in terms of number: either only or any. Either you have to believe in only or in any.
Whenever the topic of mass production is discussed, it means that many people are involved in production and many products are produced. Whenever only is replaced with any, quality decreases. And the goal of mass production is precisely to expand any. We're not getting a good place with any.

Mass production only exists when there is demand for the product. As a manufacturer, you must know in advance what customers want and would buy, otherwise your company will quickly go bankrupt. Furthermore, as a manufacturer, you must also monitor the competition and, above all, keep an eye on prices. If you produce and sell too expensively, customers will choose the lower price, and if they buy too few units, you will disappear from the market.

As you can see, a lot of intelligence, money, and knowledge are required to create products that customers want and that offer added value for them. Some of tomorrow's customers aren't even born yet; marketing specialists will try to figure out what tomorrow's customers would buy in 10 to 20 years.

Remember, anyone can invent and produce what they want and then bring it to market (today, the internet is worldwide). If there is no demand for their product, it will disappear from the market.

Today, it's mostly about click numbers – the more click numbers, the more money the advertiser makes. Even YouTube has already introduced advertising. You can assume that large corporations are scouring the internet for information and data that is and will be useful to you, harvesting your data every day. This way, they can offer you the right products in the future.

I hope, dear Wick, I haven't bored you with a little economics 1x1!

By mass production, I don't mean mass production which is used in the economy. I meant productions that are done by the masses.
Ordinary people sit in their rooms and produce music. Their total following might barely reach 1,000 people. Then they upload these productions to Soundcloud without any supervision. I can confidently say that none of these productions have the proper musical quality. Because many people who produce music do not have the necessary musical literacy. Unfortunately, this happens all too often in the music world. Because everyone has a laptop in their home with at least several music production software installed.
But can ordinary people who don't have an engineering background enter a car manufacturing plant? No, they definitely can't. They're not even allowed to see how a car is made, let alone become a car manufacturer, because no one gives them that permission. But unfortunately, the music world is oppressed, and everyone has a claim, and no one controls the competence of individuals to make music. In the past, due to the high cost of music production tools, these productions were under the scrutiny of many experts, but later, as music production became cheaper, everyone entered this field and plundered music.
By any, I mean anyone who claims to produce music, and by only, I mean those who are qualified to produce music. Whenever ordinary people make something, the quality of that thing will definitely be low.

Unfortunately, previous generations also feel the same way about the new generation's music. Music was supposed to be a bridge between generations and different cultures, but due to high and uncontrollable birth rates, it exacerbated intergenerational differences. Perhaps better things and closer relationships will happen in the future, but with the increasing acceleration in the generation gap, that possibility is not likely anytime soon. Perhaps when the new generation gets tired of endless and fruitless empiricism, we can hope for greater closeness, but perhaps it is also possible that the new generation will not give up its stubbornness and continue on its path. All of these possibilities and more exist, but it depends on the intelligent moves of the older generation to make the new generation aware of cognitive errors and point them in the right direction of thinking. The previous generation is unfortunately tired and worn out, and it is not capable of confronting the baseless thoughts of the new generation. The new generation should perhaps be left to its own devices to find the right path, but in my opinion, this is very difficult to achieve.
