A site has a plugin I want to try.
When I click the download a setup .xht file is placed at the bottom of the page.
It states for complete installation follow the instructions.
Instructions are: 1. Press download file. 2. Double click on the exe file. 3. Press Yes to install.

Is this going to load malware into my machine or install the plugin, or both?
Wonder if it's a safe thing to do?
My gut tells me not to mess with it.

    Thanks for your advice!

Interesting cause it's an R2R site and everything they have...way more than we have available...is all set up with those installers.
But I am afraid to try it.

You have been warned by @No Avenger, to keep away from it. I'm telling you to keep away from it too, especially as R2R do not have sites, but ultimately, it is your computer and your decision. I recommend you back everything you wish to keep backed up though, for when you have to re-install everything!

BTW, I love the Jester Avatar. That is just the thing I would use if I was going on a wind up!

you could use sandboxie and see what happens.
full backup is always a good idea, regardless.

    Thanks much everyone!

Yeah I got hooked by all those goodies they show...
Amazing some group would go through all that trouble with all those packages and setups, sound samples, images, and extra pages, etc., just to fuck up some computers!

Like the old saying, " If it seems too good to be true..."
    Thanks again!

People would screw their own family members for money, let alone some anonymous website visitor. What they can install on people's computers will in one way or the other make them some money. It's not just to fuck up your computer. They don't have interest in that.

As they say: "trace the money".

And yes, R2R have no website. They're neither stupid, nor greedy. Just the opposite.

    Cheers!

Download the file, but before opening/installing, upload it to VirusTotal and see what it says.

I downloaded the file and as Olaf suggested I ran it through VirusTotal.
It scanned the file with 58 programs and declared it clean.
Also ran the the URL through VirusTotal and it came out clean.

Opened the file in Sandboxie, other than about 6 search engines, browser toolbars and odd junk that could be opted out of I didn't see anything else. Doesn't mean there isn't something else buried in the install though. Oh well...

I suppose it is one way to keep up to date with all the nice shiny new viruses his computer can look forward to receiving :D

  20. You registered at this site to ask for advice by the fine furry freaks here, were told in no uncertain terms and with explanations about why you should not use it, but you forged ahead anyway. Like my great great grandfather used to say, "Indoda isisidenge ukukholelwa ukuba inokubeka intloko yakhe emlonyeni wengonyama ngaphandle kokuba unina enento into ethi ngaye ... Musa !!! Zomibini iziphumo ezide kunye nexeshana azicingeki".

"A man is a fool to believe he can put his head into the mouth of a lion without his mother having something to say about it...Don't"!!! Both the long and short term outcomes are bleak".

    See ya.
