is there a way to keep notepad on even when doing other things in browser

to make it work i usually i have to minimize the current browser and i put notepad next to it

is there a way to just make it stay on even when i'm doing other things in browser

Download and install PowerToys and enable the Always On Top option. After that you can pin whatever windows to be always on top.
    https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/releases/tag/v0.77.0

Btw; you can code in the regular Windows Notepad as well. It just doesn't have the same advanced features and aid for coding as Notepad++ does.

you can code in notepad too, but it doesnt has the syntax highligthing and no plugin support.

I mean i am using notepad too, to check open all kinds of files and check for the filetype or even sometimes to fix things in any code files.

but yeah i would simply use notepad++ if you need that always on top feature, its a default feature and just works fine.

for text i'm using Notepad2. it's a lot simpler than Notepad++, but has that "Always on Top" feature that you want.
    there's also Notepad3, but i stick with Notepad2.

You could always use the ALT + TAB shortcut keys to get focus back to notepad, (providing you have an instance of it running of course). Even in minimised form it will open it's window for you when you tab to it.

I believe there could be even simple solution,
if Notepad app was pinned on Windows taskbar (within first 9 positions),
then hotkey Win+Alt+number can open the app,
or hotkey Win+Shift+number can bring opened app to front quickly,

problem is, those hotkeys won't always work if an app currently opened utilizes such hotkeys on its own

That happened to me back in the days of XP. I thought I was being clever setting up loads of hot keys shortcuts but I made a right pigs ear of it. I don't use them any more, but you're right though. If used sensibly they can be a great way of saving time.

AlexanderPro / SmartSystemMenu is so good.
    https://github.com/AlexanderPro/SmartSystemMenu
SmartSystemMenu extends system menu of all windows in the system. It appends next custom items to menu:

    • Information. Shows a dialog with information of the current window and process: the window handle, the window caption, the window style, the window class, the process name, the process id, the path to the process.
    • Roll Up. Allows to roll up and down the current window.
    • Aero Glass. Allows to add the "Aero Glass" blur to the current window. (Windows Vista and higher. Mostly for console windows.)
    • Always On Top. Allows the current window to stay on top of all other windows.
    • Send To Bottom. Allows to send to bottom the current window.
    • Save Screenshot. Allows to save the current window screenshot in a file.
    • Open File In Explorer. Allows to open a process file in a File Explorer.
    • Drag By Mouse. Allows to drag by mouse the current window.
    • Click Through. Allows to click through the current window.
    • Hide For Alt+Tab. Allows to hide the current window for the Taskbar and Alt+Tab switch.
    • Resize. Allows to change the size of the current window.
    • Move To. Allows to move the current window to another monitor.
    • Alignment. Allows the current window to be aligned with any of the 9 positions on the desktop.
    • Transparency. Allows to change the transparency of the current window.
    • Priority. Allows to change the current window's program priority.
    • Clipboard. Allows to copy all window texts (including console, ms office products, etc.) to clipboard and clear clipboard.
    • Dimmer. Dims all but the currently focused window.
    • Buttons. Allows to disable "Minimize", "Maximize" and "Close" button.
    • System Tray. Allows to minimize or suspend the current window to the system tray.
    • Other Windows. Allows to close and minimize all windows in the system except the current.
    • Start Program. Allows to start programs which is in the settings.

definitely a must have, here the transparency feature is the most used once... a truly beast.

Appreciate the suggestion, just gave it a try and really like it, some nice additional features to the standard NP.

glad you liked it. the only thing i miss in notepad is standard formatting, like in WordPad (bold, italic, heading etc). i need that in a simple, notepad environment

Yeah that would have been the cherry on the cake, although I would tend to rough out my text in Notepad and then I either use Atlantis if I wanted to use a better Wordpad clone with all the text tools and formatting or all of the notes I make for my DAW / VSTs etc I use MyNotesKeeper

I think I have replaced 9 machines now with Notepad 2 lol

Definitely an even better suggestion than Powertoys, if the only thing you want is to get the always on top feature. Powertoys does use some CPU when running in the background so having it installed for just one of the features is a bit overkill.

I suggest that OP @passeee change "best answer" to pratyahar's reply (just in case someone in the future stumbles upon this thread looking for an always on top script)!

Yes, you can keep Notepad (or any window) always on top while working in a browser by using third-party tools like DeskPins or AutoHotkey. These tools allow you to pin any window so it remains visible, even while you're active in other applications. For instance, with AutoHotkey, you can create a simple script to toggle the "always-on-top" feature with a keyboard shortcut. Some modern operating systems, like Windows 11, may also have built-in options for this through virtual desktops or specific app settings. By the way, speaking of productivity tools, what's the best e-ink tablet right now? I’m planning to buy a few for my kids and myself in 2025. I’ve heard of Geniatech e ink tablet, which some say makes the best e-ink tablets globally. But I’m curious that are there other brands worth exploring?

    Interesting.

mNotepad is completely free as a plugin if anyone else is working within a DAW.
