    Peace + Love.

I still haven't figured out why the lineal descendant of Miami bass music and 80's electro-hip-hop--namely, Trap--seems to sound so good at first listen and so bad at the second or third listen.
I sort of understand why it "works":- all the right things are exaggerated: the bass, the kick, and snare are loud as hell and bright and punchy, etc...I understand how that lack of dynamicity--the endless boom and thud and rumble--can cause listener fatigue, but what else is going on? Is it the preponderance of arpeggiation over melody? Is it the lack of warmth and "dirt" and distortion?

    What's going on?
    Somebody explain.

Just replace the "T" with a "C" and you have your answer

no bullshit, I really liked this vid. everything from his initial observations to his off the cuff snickering at himself 'mumbling'

imo a few elements to your question:
    • basic exploitation of currently (last 10 yrs+) mass produced soundsystems. Really this started with cds; bass & treble only, no mid respresentation
    • everyone can make it. the stuff 'dreams' are made of I suppose..,

i think you could start with the trap style and actually write your own version that does not have the problems or weaknesses you identified on some other trap songs. ( make it into something "more" than in the past brother.

You have a point there...I mentioned in a previous thread how in the 80's songs were hollowed out to make them sound big and clean...and in the process they got rid of the "soul"...Trap is rather soulless...

Come to think of it, they're mostly indistinguishable as they mostly rely on arpeggiated synths or pads rather than melody...

    Hmmm...

I have an idea that may be fun for you
take that track and put it through like melodyne or some polyphonic auto tune where you can change specific parts to different tunings
and then twist it all around .
it may up giving you sick ideas (especially if you pick a song where you really like the groove,
then once you have something you really like make a new beat like that.
just a idea to spice things up brother.
    )

Bruh, I'm resting at the moment. Not touching music at all until my soul is right.

Is there a scientific reason behind music you do like? Not "it has A & B, I like that," but "if there's A & B in it, that's enough for me to like it"?
Trap's not my thing, but someone makes it & someone listens to it, so it's a thing. When people get bored, it'll change or go away. And then maybe come back again:dunno:
Ever listened to drone or 90s stoner rock? If the meters move at all, ur doing it wrong:grooves:
Did that for 4 years. Still don't follow any scene/listen to much. Works for me.

Interesting point baz, i think you might be on to something...i could be totally out in my estimation here, but i get the sense that the exaggerations are the very things that limit its interest, listen-wise...
It can hook you in as it is designed to appeal and to sell i guess..it could relate to the loudness war you hear in radio songs...we're hearing it more in songs for mass-appeal...the listener is fed the music rather than having to actively listen and this serves its purpose...a limited-time assault on the interest button..
i think its only when the listener can be taken through layers within music, to find new dimensions within in are they more engaged with it for a longer time....
Miles Davis said something along the lines in response to a journalist who said give them all yesses thats what is best, " No give them a hundred no's and then a yes" ....if you overload at the front of the piece, there's nowhere for the ear to go, you've hit the ceiling from the outset.

Yeah bro... @electriclash also had a good point about the standardisation and mass production of music...carving out the mids and leaving only bass and treble...
