It kind of makes the stuff I do sound quite boring, so I am thinking about changing direction and becoming more experimental. What do you guys think?

Well, they're playing in front of a crowd.. so what do you think?

Not my kind of music, but there's clearly a market there. I don't know this band, and "market" is very subjective though, but it seems they have a pretty decent sized audience.

Does making that kind of music appeal to you?? If it does, I'd say go for it.

I don't think anything, I am just reacting to an experience I had which made me question what I was doing :)

    Well, on the pro side:
you don't have to be too skilled on your instrument.

This was experimental on the 80/90s. Not to diminish anything of it, I'm a huge fan of Sonic Youth, got all their albums ,but this sound is well stablished already, I would not call it experimental nowadays, just post-rock.

I don't mean to copy the sound per se, it's more about the structure. Most music today is built on top of predictable structures.

Oddly enough, I've been thinking the last couple days about whether or not I could write relatable melodic music with no repetition. Repetition and familiarity is so fundamental to establishing what most people like about music... it would be tough. I guess the serialists did that but I want to try for something more accessible...

sounds horrible - my poor ears, remove the drums and call it a guitar drone.

Not bad ... for the days I despise everything containing major and minor chords. And on the plus side: no Yoko Ono.

props for her for rocking in her 70s! what a boss!

theres definitely a market for this sound. post punk, with a splash of electronic elements thrown in. its sort of having a revival right now. Post edm and trap, people want a more raw sound

That's the whole point :) It's easy to make pretty music with a well chosen chord progression and a few arpeggios, but it's not challenging and it's been done a zillion times already.

i can see that, but then the drums have no meaning to mean, they distract from the guitar sounds, which sound okay to my ears.

Here's some more live footage from a gig in California, USA. It's not pro-shot, but they did use some Zoom mics.

These performances were recorded at 2024 Glastonberry Festival. People being in the audience doesn't actually demonstrate there is a "market for it". There are just people who paid for a festival and didn't go to some other stage instead. I saw Sonic Youth live many times, but I don't remember any time they were the headliner I went to see. A good opener was always like a free nice bonus, and that's what this looks like to me. Not an indication of a lot more than that.

I dug it. But then again i've always been into outside kind of stuff anyway. It could use some fripp-like guitar riffing over the top of that - would make it killer. Somewhat reminiscent of very rudimentary "Crimson" in a way.

Progressive stuff that pushes the envelope has always been better than the mainstream in every way except if you're looking to make anything more than a poverty wage from it.
