yeah, we kind of went off on one!

it’s right though, they are tools, can get great results, and have to be better than using loops?? Or the likes of Arcade?? But even then, I kind of still would rather people made music however they need to as long as they enjoy it.

I'd just like to be the one who mentions the elephant in the room...
The word "still", in both the thread title and the original post...:woot:
Is this implying the belief that technology has moved beyond a real bass?

Its all relative. You might find you love the bass, and can express yourself in ways you never expected. Or you might be better at that with your mouse. Or you might spend 20 years playing that sucker like a rock star then reire a jazz musician. It might even just be a wooden midi controller...

good point. As a guitarist, the thought of someone using Amplesound or similar to have a “guitar” on a commercial release is abhorrent to me, but what’s the difference between that and those that write and have their music synced that is orchestral? Can they play the piccolo, euphonium or triangle??? Then it’s questioning the likes of Normal Cook (wasn’t a deliberate attempt to pick a bass player btw!), that only really achieved worldwide success using samples.
I think it’s very genre specific, some will ALWAYS use a certain set of instruments, but as certain genres crossover, things will change a little.

that said, if any DJ kicks off at Tom Morello for emulating a set of decks on the guitar, I WILL take that as a personal affront.

That’s what I found, and I found that since I got into recording more, I got into synths, orchestral, and I load up random things and try to create “something” and build on that. For me, it lets me break free of muscle memory and patterns that I have realised have been holding me back from “writing”. I have always been able to work with other peoples ideas, work on arrangements, add counter melody, harmony etc... but trying to write a “riff” I just struggled with. Can solo over most things, but creating that “core”, just couldn’t do until I moved beyond my main instrument, and that then allowed me to write chord sequences and music on the guitar. Finally, after 20 odd years!

    totally agree man:shalom:

use what you got. EDIT: as a matter of fact i used THU-slate edition's "fake bass", (just simulates bass from guitar di) for the first 6 mos into recording so i 100% agree. this vid was still fresh on my mind though so i had to share. this thread was just too on the nose not to.
    Damn right he is!:hahaha:

ooooh, not seen that. Better than the old method of pitchshifting (bass players, I mean proper bass players, are probably losing their shit right now!!)

Great playing, but Mike makes really stupid faces when he's playing. I wish his friends would tell him.

yea man, its just one of the stock presets. you just play what would be your bass line on gtr and it does a VERY convincing job. way better than pitchshifters and at least you're still "writing" the bass part with an instrument in hand.

o and don't worry ab any bass players seeing this and getting upset. i'm yet to meet a bass player that can read...

Same happened to Sharay, yet different too. After that Joy To The World video he went on to work with Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle. A huge list. (He can do James Jamerson!)
And of course he's just playing the role you'd expect when you see him with an act.
And really, that's all it's about for any of us.
I think a lot of us have to settle for playing well within our boundaries at the end of the day. In most jobs.
But he's been playing with Corey Henry, so I guess he has a better platform now.

don't buy bass! never ever think of getting one. it's addictive. beyond your imagination. your life is over once you have one. it will change your world. Everything you believe about music before this, will be forever lost. It will change you. Hell, it will change everything! just don't. trust me.
