I am half irish on my mothers side and (proir to covid) spent a lot of very happy time in Connimara on the west coast, Republic of Ireland. Irish music runs deep with me, I play the bodhrán, and very much consider Ireland my ancestral home.

While Irish Traditional music no longer makes it into the charts as it once did, it is part of the Irish identity, woven in thier DNA, and in parts of Ireland it is still as popular as ever. Live nights in pubs, where anyone is welcome to bring along thier instruments and join the craic. Spontaneous, singing, clapping, foot stomping and dancing can and does happen and it is encouraged.

Not sure how Covid has affected this but if the irish can find a way to have a craic, they will.

There are two many great Irish artists to mention but below are some of my favourites.

DE DANNAN ‎– Welcome To The Hotel Connemara

De Dannon - Hey Jude (yes the beatles song - an excellent irish version)

Altan - A Bhean Udaí Thall

    Téada w/ Samantha Harvey & Emma O'Sullivan

mundy & sharon shannon - galway girl live

I would also include in this list...

The Corrs Live At Lansdowne Road (Home coming concert)
Yes, known to the world mainly as a pop band with Irish element woven in, they started out like most irish bands as a family group playing Traditional Irish Folk in the local bars. They really are excellent and accomplished musicians who are widely credited in ireland as taking the Celtic sound to huge popularity around the world, more so than any other Irish artist. Enya is consider more celtic new age.

I have seen them live twice, their concerts are flawless and the crowds are buzzing with energy.

Toss the feathers, a trad irish classic, is the last song of this famous concert - watch the crowd.

My wife is related to the great Irish piper Seamus Ennis. I never met him myself, but there was rarely a family wedding or funeral that his daughter didn't play the organ at.

It's wonderful to hear about your strong connection to Ireland and its rich musical heritage. Irish traditional music indeed holds a special place in the hearts of many, both within Ireland and around the world. The sense of community and joyous atmosphere you described in traditional Irish music sessions is something truly magical and cherished by many.
