i made a really cool beat about a week ago (probably my best to date) but my mind is stuck on making something as good or better

so when i open the DAW, after about 10 minutes of fucking around i cringe at what im doing and quit

has anyone ever been through such silly-ness?

lol this happens to me sometimes with writing lyrics

"man, [song that i wrote 3 months ago] makes this look like dogshit. i quit."

it's an unproductive and probably unhealthy attitude. best to just get over it if you can. eventually we'll make something cooler than that last beat/song/whatever, but not if we stop everything 20% of the way in because it's not already a masterpiece

probably your understanding is greater than your ability to actually apply your understanding. You know what can be done better but you can't really do it yet.

You need to care more about practice and application rather than knowledge.

Everyone can say or know something about a topic, but its the people that make shit happen that counts.

Every song I write I feel needs be better than the last, so what happens is that I write less material but don't write "filler". Competing with myself keeps my work at a certain level of standard.

Yes, all artists go through this - painters, sculptures, actors, etc... You basically have to get to the point where you're ok with writing garbage. The main point is to just keep churning tunes out. 5 will be garbage, 1 will be good. If you're meant to do this craft, and you're happy with at least 1 song so far, then you have the capability to write 100 more in the future. Granted, you will write 400 more that you aren't happy with.

Don't let your realization stop you from experimenting and working out of your element to get to your destination, either.

In a previous incarnation, when younger, I was an athlete and strived to always break my own performance ceiling. If not for nagging injuries I might have run a three minute mile, beat Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point game in the NBA and led my nation to multiple Olympic gold medals. As is and such as the dust of my karma has flittered and fallen, I must settle to have each of my songs be unique in some way in order for me to feel that I am accomplishing incrementally better pieces to add to the body of my work.
