Indeed, any current iMac will outperform the one you are leaving behind. The only real concern is the same as with MacBook Pros: Post 2012 models have the RAM banks soldered to the chassis and use a custom-shaped SSD drive to save up space and make them slimmer. That means expandability is out of the window. Besides, the latest Macs come with El Capitan OS by default, and OS X cannot be downgraded to an older system. Based on this, you have a decision to make, buy the latest and stick to what it brings by default (which is not bad at all) or buy a 2012 model (they even keep selling them new) and get some adaptability for your system. For example, you can always double the official RAM specification of your Mac. BTW, I have a 2012 MBP and a 2014 Mac Mini and Logic runs smoothly (well I never have more than 20 something tracks in a project, I have to admit).

An imac that held up for 8 years. Wow. I'll be happy if I can get that much performance out my mac pro. Speaking of mac pros, that's what I would suggest. The new one. For 600 dollars more you can get a 6 core, that will be more powerful than the imac. No problems with CPU at all. I might even have some to spare, and that's how i like it...a little cushion is good so i'm not pushing the limits of my cpu. I'd wait till the new is released though. Amazing computer.

Wait a couple of months. Apple will refresh their entire computer lineup this year so worth purchasing the latest technology to ensure you will be future-proof: USB-C, Thunderbolt 3 etc.
