    Hi
I'm looking for a good wah plugin. I've tested several but it's not worth my old Cry Baby that I sold a long time ago. What an idiot! Do you know how to emulate a Good Wah in a Daw?

In fact, my project is to mix old Dub à la King tubby with my Mackie Onyx 1640I in firewire from Reaper whose tracks and FX sends I can send to my console. I want to make the tracks myself and welcome people to my place to have fun and let friends touch the console too.

I need Win 7 to install the Mackie drivers. They're no longer drivers usable on Macs except up to Yosemite.
    Thx

Best Wah VST Plugins for Dub (Windows 7-Compatible)
Most modern plugins are 64-bit only and may not support Win 7, so here are Win 7–friendly and dub-usable options:

    1. Kuassa Efektor WF3607 Wah Filter
      • Very good emulation of Cry Baby-style wah.

      • Includes envelope, manual, and auto modes.

      • Lightweight and Win 7–compatible.

      • Works great automated via MIDI or DAW envelope.
    2. Wah-Wah by Mokafix Audio (Free)
      • Old-school VST, modeled after vintage hardware.

      • May not be as polished, but surprisingly effective for dub filtering.

      • Manual control via automation or MIDI.
    3. Simulanalog Guitar Suite (Free)
      • Classic freeware suite that includes a Cry Baby emulation.

      • Sounds gritty and imperfect, which is great for old-school dub.

      • Needs a bit of tweaking and may require a 32-bit bridge if your DAW is 64-bit.
    4. MeldaProduction MFilter / MAutowah
      • More surgical, but can be automated for a rhythmic dub sweep.

      • Free and paid versions.

      • Great for filter-style wahs rather than guitar realism.
How to "Play" the Wah Like a Dub Engineer
    1. Automate the Wah
      • Use Reaper’s automation lanes to ride the wah just like you’d move the Cry Baby with your foot.

      • If you have a MIDI controller with an expression pedal, you can assign it to the filter freq in real time.
    2. Send to Wah FX Bus
      • Route your instrument (e.g., guitar skank, keys, hi-hats) to an FX send that goes to a wah/filter FX track.

      • Then send that to your Mackie Onyx for hands-on manipulation via EQ, delay, etc.
    3. Use an Envelope Follower
      • Some plugins (like Kuassa) have envelope followers that react to input level—great for auto-wah without MIDI fuss.
️ Example Dub Wah Chain in Reaper
    1. Track (e.g. Guitar Skank)
      • Send to Bus “Wah FX”
    2. Wah FX Track
      • Insert Kuassa Wah or Mokafix Wah

      • Add tape-style delay (e.g., Voxengo Tempo Delay or Bionic Delay)

      • Optional: spring reverb
    3. Route Wah FX Out to Mackie Channel (via Reaper output routing)
This lets you dub the wah like an instrument, tweaking the channel EQ, riding sends, and cutting faders on the console.

Heads Up: Windows 7 and Drivers
    • You're right: the Mackie Onyx 1640i works best on Win 7. Just make sure you disable driver signature enforcement if needed.

    • Use Reaper 6.x for best compatibility—it runs stable on Win 7 and doesn't break your setup.
    Bonus: Hardware Add-On Idea
If you want to get real foot-control back, consider:

    • A used Cry Baby Mini Wah

    • Or, for hybrid workflow: an expression pedal into a MIDI interface that maps to wah filter cutoff. (e.g., via ReaLearn in Reaper)
Would you like a Reaper template set up for Dub FX sends, Wah routing, and Mackie channel mapping? I can help with that too.

Big up for keeping dub hands-on and alive — your setup’s got serious potential.

Thank. A lot of informations. Will try Those plugins. I'll use a midi pedal to map the plugin. Cheers!
    And what is that? :

I exclusively use the Nembrini Wah. I do not use anything else since years.

    Hi
I tried It but for me this is not as good as a real pedal. The amplitude is not very good beetween low and higs filters. And not very organic.
I know it's a matter of taste. And I like nembrini plugins.
On this video I prefer the aut trem Wha light. What do you think about this plugin.

Bedroom Producers Blog is proud to host all of the freeware VST plugins which were developed by Mokafix Audio, with kind permission of the author.

Mokafix Audio has developed a number of high quality guitar pedal emulations and virtual electric piano instruments for Windows, both commercial and freeware.

Unfortunately, none of these were available for download as of recently, so I’ve decided to contact Efflam Le Bivic of Mokafix Audio (now a graphic designer at Native Instruments) personally and ask him if it would be OK to host the freeware ones on BPB. Thankfully, he said yes!

Maybe at some point someone will build a real one that sounds just like the Nembrini. Then it finally sounds like a real one. [IMG]

Good joke. I'm sometimes to old for plugins!:guru:
    And I Love real gear.
I found a way to automate Nembrini in reaper. There is a cc automation inside the plugin but does not work for me. So I used my midi Keyboard to do it in touch mode. Will buy a midi pedal.

i do. but not in the traditional sense as a guitar effect. I'll use it for sound design stuff. sending neuro reese basses to it, or adding it as a layer in a complex multi effect chain.
