If I'm on the street, I record the melody with my voice on my cell phone, if I'm at home, I take my guitar and play the melody on it then record it either on my cell phone or using a microphone. Then, I organize/correct the notes using my guitar and, only after this, I go to a score editor or to my DAW, where I transcribe the melody into notation and/or MIDI for arrangement or orchestration purposes.

I understand. I'm familiar with such things. But anyway you have to make some job to fix it. It would be better to own some skills.

Somebody/something was an archicect for this.

Bach hardly owned smartphone. And Mozart didn't. And they hardly were "active" for 60-90 secs after awakening.

 

Using the phone too but I prefer to write in Korg Gadget. All the sounds are there and it's quick enough to avoid forgetting the idea during the capture. I could record audio in there too but I haven't found it necessary so far.

 

If I'm not able to get to my pc to do it, I'll just hum /sing it into my phone and record it for later.

Then, once I'm ready, I'll just do my best job of playing it on my midi controller and recording it live. I'll adjust notes later, as needed.

If I don't have a concrete idea planned, I'll just noodle around on the keyboard recording multiple takes/ideas and just take the best of what I did and clean that up.
