If you had zero access to new plugins/samples/tutorials, how long could you manage?

Holy shit... for me nobody's worth of giving away a piano.

PS. Except for Billie Eilish, of course

Those are some great responses, thanks a lot everyone.

Funny that several people brought up Soothe and Melodyne, because those two are a nice example of what you'd miss out on if you didn't keep up or stayed away from new products. Those deresonating plugins have been quite a game changer.

Some of you were writing that having too much can slow you down, and that it can make you not do any music because you're busy with collecting and checking out stuff instead of actually creating music. My personal motivation for making this thread is exactly this, because I think I buy and collect too many plugins, samples and tutorials instead of actually making music with them. So I was thinking, maybe I should clean up my folders, limit myself to a bare minimum portfolio of top quality tools and plugins, and then just forget about everything else for a while. My collecting has become an addiction in the truest sense of the word and I have to do something about it. So I was just curious about what your thoughts are, about to what extent it is neccessary to keep up with new releases.

I suppose my greatest fear is that plugins that I use and grow dependent on, become unusable due to developer bankruptcy, OS updates, DRM failures, and things like that. So, keeping that in mind, I was also considering limiting myself to tools that don't require dongles.

I can also sense a lot of experience in many of the comments above. I assume, when you get more experienced, these things don't seem as daunting as they would to someone who's new to production.

Ah, it's complicated. Thank you again for writing your responses, greatly enjoyed reading them.

Oh, I give Everyone pianos. all the Time. but after I get to know 'em a little better. usually after a couple of Drinks and some camping trips - I'll give 'em a piano

Just Know what you Like. some people get a Kick out of experimenting with new plugins.

But dont get too carried away or you'll no longer be a musician but a scientist in a lab with test tubes and micro-pipets

    and Finally Steve

I Dont know what you are talkin'' about dude

Another aspect of this quote is that if you really want, you can have everything you really need in one instrument, so another quote for this would be " I am not scared by newbie with a bazillion instruments (which is me btw.) but by a person who mastered one instrument".

Also to answer this question: I have enough stuff to explore for a few lifetimes, but the tuts I have sets me on really great path. I need to buy a few more stuff so I would have well-rounded library for every possible occasion, but I am more than happy with what I have.

Look at these mf's in this thread that all need banjos in their lives.

Chew some straw mf's, you don't need a hard drive for that.

Watch Pitch perfect (1&2). The lead actor was doing the same thing ten years ago.
And as @Xupito questioned if it's music? Yes and no.
It's someone else's music so yes, but it is sampled and manipulated in a machine by a glorified D.J who can sing just like the lady in Pitch Perfect except the Pitch Perfect lady was better - 10 years ago though.
Turn all the power off and get her to play an instrument and sing in the dark where she cannot see anything or press anything. That is where the proof of real skills are. Acapella probably and that is music but what she's doing with electronica has as much real musician feel as a dead walrus, so no.

Well a lot of people I know who made it in the music biz actually limit themselves in order not to get distracted by stuff on their HD. Knowing how to program one (good) synth is far more effective than owning every synth or synth-plugin there is and a shitload of presets you‘ll never use. Fuck I even met a guy once (booked him as a DJ) and he told me that he made his amazing EP with one synth and a drum machine & 2 minidisc recorders by recording each track on one and then layering it on to the other - how crazy is that, that really made me re-think my approach on music production. On the other hand I know people who spend a fortune on their studio and don‘t make any money at all because they are blocked in the head because somebody told them you need an SSL desk or shit won‘t happen. That‘s my first post on AudioSex, so far I‘ve been a consumer, about time to interact with the scene. Cudos to all the likeminded people here who share my passion.

i can see that, i think many of us tend to substitute lack of focus and discipline ("inspiration") with a new daw or lack of basic musical structure and knowledge for new vsts or downloading 5 more tutorials, and so on.

mostly its first when you have real projects no matter how simple but real visions with a timetable that all that other cheap shot crap takes the backseat.

now sure, there is no rule with a exception to the rule, im sure people with a long trajectory, lots of work behind can gather a lot of stuff software/hardware and handle it but that is veeery different than to try to tackle what is mainly compositional problems and lack of experience with totally pointless distractions

My friend. Been there. The solution? Get a few pieces of good, can be used as well, analog gear.
Get just one good analog EQ, Synth and reverb unit and i will tell you your lust for plugins will end because you will realize the differences between plugins is not as big as it is between good analog gear and plugins.
You will then start lusting for more analog gear but at least you will stop collecting plugins.
