If we all bought iLok 2 keys, would teams have an easier time "liberating" the software protected by them? (ie. Slate Digital)

I would think so, as they would only have to focus on modifying the communication between the hardware and the software, and not emulating the hardware.

If this is true, wouldn't we all be willing to take a $50 kick in the pants for an iLok?

It will only solve the most easy check, dongle presence. Which is nothing, return 1 to a couple functions.
On most iLok2 stuff the license is used to decrypt a part of the code needed to run the plug/app (not to get too technical).
So having the real thing plugged changes nothing, full emulation is still needed.

    Good to know.

I'm assuming a keygen, installing keys to the iLok key wont work as theres a server-side check?

So unless a team wants to host their own massive pseudo-server... LOL

No its not matter of server side checks, is matter of a lot of stuff going on together that just make impossible to keygen it.
Only way would be to emulate the eden/fusion license server to reply to the plug "questions" with valid "answers".
But it will require also previous decrypting of the encrypted memory bundle using a legit license and rebuilding the executable
with the decrypted code, which is a major pita and time consuming job to start with. And it's just the beginning.
And anyway there's hardware side protection too making impossible to write a valid license to the dongle if you ever manage to create one,
I'm almost sure it would require hardware (EEPROM chip) reversing. It has been done in the past with way easier dongles, no way here.

if we would do that and buy all iLok dongles, the Pace had won the game and i want support any dongle companies nor their users (here the audio companies!).

I am with TinTin on that if you need it buy it, if you can not or wont, find an alternative free or not free and spend money on that to support the developers, which are not using dongles.

Well, here's the story with Japan TV Cards (B-CAS cards).

In Japan, you need a special card to watch the Major/Good TV channels iirc. If you get a new TV, you can get one, if you lose it, you needa write a letter, etc. You can't get one willy-nilly. Now when they got wind that the encryption was cracked , OH CRAP THEY'RE EVERYWHERE. Can't change it w/o breaking a lotta things.

Taking the protection code out is the only way,
But that is easier said then done.
