There is some plugs I really need and are locked with iLok 2 so I can't get them. If I buy an iLok2 and the software is there a chance it could invalidate my… 'special' plugins?

    Thanks :)

Yes, ArticStorm, you are right. iLoks are a pain in the ass. I can confirm that, because I already had to pay $ 200 for broken iLoks (though these were iLok 1s). If this thing is out of warranty and breaks or you lose it, prepare to spend a lot of money.

I dislike the concept of iLoks but I had to conform. I bought the entire Slate bundle (except for FG-x cuz theres an older version available).

I haven't had any problems with it, occasionally, like once every 2 months, it "unplugs" its self so I take it out, put it back in and it works again.

If any plugin were to have trouble with it, it would probably be the new iZotope stuff because they use some kinda iLok protection and the k'd version still works.

And I have to say this as a general statement, when most people claim some product "crapped out" on them, its 99% due to user error, and 1% due to manufacturer defect. This is getting off topic but for example when people bag on certain external hard drive brands and say they lost all their files and then they say they may have knocked the drive over a couple times but that shouldnt have caused it....

I can honestly say that in the 13 years I've been old enough to own a computer and buy lots of gadgets and gizmos, I have never had a product fail on me mostly because I treat them like baby rabbits (or insert really delicate animal here).

So in summary, no iLok wont affect your other plugins.

All I can say is that I treated my first iLok 1 like a raw egg. 1 year passed, everything was fine, second year without problems, third year was alright. But then 4 years after I bought it, from one day to another the iLok wasn't detected anymore by any computer. As it was out of warranty, I had to pay a lot of money for sending the iLok back, license recovery fees and the new iLok. I got a new iLok 1. And guess what, after three years, again all computers rejected to recognize the new iLok. Again I had to do the RMA procedure. Now I have two iLok 2s and I already fear the moment when history repeats. But on the other hand you can't simply get Slate, Eiosis, Flux and a lot of other great plugins without iLok. Man, I really hope that one day iLok will be cracked, so we can close this ugly chapter. But I guess they already have the iLok 3 in the cellar and take it out when necessary...

The new no dongle ilok approach I find works well for me, I certainly don't worry about the things I refused to go along with the dongle approach for.
As long as you got net connections available you can take your licences to anywhere you need them without too much hassle, worth spending 5 minutes installing the software and going about it that way and no worries, plus no dongle cost and no conflicts with special plugs either :)
What I don't understand is if all ilok licences are available in this form or if some are dongle only ? I've only ever bought software using ilok that says no dongle required

Yes but can it work OFFLINE?
And two times i had to reinstall the manager program as it stopped working.
Not the biggest deal of course as reinstall doesnt take that long BUT if you are offline there is no change in hell to get it to work

Just yesterday, my one month old mainboard died. Shut down the machine for the night, returned in the morning, dead. Also, I have lost several hdds due to faulty design.
Your products didn't fail mostly because you treat them well but because you're extremely lucky and you should be aware of that.
