I have this monitor in 27-inches:
Bought mine on sale for $200. I use it for semi-pro photography and music.

My friend has this one in 25 inches:
A little over $300, but I think it is worth it. Very sharp and built well. I wish I bought his!

Perhaps you need to think of the size of your room!

Then this will determine this size of the monitors you will need.

KrK Rokit 5 are a good start for a smaller room or Rokit 8 for a larger room.

There do have a very good balance of sound but are a little bass heavy.

Always buy the best monitors you can afford tho.

    Regards Arron

First you should treat the acoustics of your room first (if needed) then after measure or at least estimate the size of your room. 5" studio monitors are great for smaller rooms (less bass but more mids) and 8" are great for bigger rooms (more bass).

I have auditioned a lot of studio monitors but the best ones, under a budget , are listed below according to whats best (well at least for me) but all of them are great in their own ways. Check them out! :)

    1. Yamaha HS series (Yamaha HS5 or Yamaha HS8)

    2. M-Audio BX Series

    3. JBL LSR305

    4. Presonus Eris Series

    5. Behringer B2030A / Behringer Nekkst

Before you buy, do check ebay... there are some sellers on there that have monitors at much lower than retail prices..

got a very good price for my HS 8's there, little over $200 each

swissonic monitors are basically yamaha replicas, like 230€ for two 6,5

Careful with used monitors, never buy unless you can test them before.

I'd go for a pair of Yamaha HS-7 which can be had cheap shopping around or better still used/second-hand*. You should also be able to find a pair of Alesis m1 easily less than 300, Either would be ample for a small room where you're likely to get a lot of problems with reference monitors that deliver very deep and clear low-end due to the acoustics. I'd go for the Yamaha's due to the extended higher frequencies they are capable of delivering. The HS-8 is superb for the price I reckon but as said the low-end would likely cause you more problems in a confined space.

As spacetime said, Make certain you don't buy blind used or you might end up with duds and unfortunately there are piece's of shit around that have no decent moral compass or common bloody decency*.

    All the best :)
