I have mediocre experience with Samsung, 500GB 860 EVO died after less than mild use (all out of sudden, bricked, all data lost immediately), and 2TB 980 Pro apparently suffers from bugged firmware which kills lifespan of the drive,
nowadays there are other competitive options like Solidigm (=Intel), Kingston, WD, Crucial...

980 Pro has firmware update to fix but yikes. It is funny how many different experiences everybody has.

Being a Samsung fan, I got the drives bc they are supposedly more reliable, fast.. and look cool ;). But those bad batches are real. My 870 died slowly and painfully. Kontakt and SF libs began glitching, loading slowly or not at all. Reinstalling some helped, but ofc just temporarily. So, I ran diagnostics discovering critical errors. I have older (abused) Samsung SSDs running just fine.

When I installed the new 2TB drives, I switched over-provisioning ON (~10%). Do you think that is a must? Or at least a good idea? I didn't bother to switch that ON on my other drives. I keep around 40% of my 980 Pro free though. I think this info could be helpful for Oly when he'll be installing his new drive(s).

No, Oly - that is NOT a reliable drive. Trust Samsung, Crucial or WD. If you buy cheap chinese crap (or taiwan or whatever), you’ll be just rolling dice.

I have several Samsung SSD's. I've never had a problem with any 850/860 Evo and Pro series.

the NAND doesnt need cooling, but the controller chips tend to get quite warm, so I like to add heatsinks to them on bare m2 drives

Solidigm is basically Intel, P44 Pro is rated well, but quite expensive compared to KC3000, WD SN850X and even Samsung 990 Pro

Thanks @tzzsmk - from where I'm buying it it looks like the 2TB 990 Pro is only about £38/€44 more than the Soldigm.
