Here's my mix. I didn't add anything extra or replace any of the source materials, other than some embellishments with effects. I mixed this according to my taste, which is on the brighter side, and also without any reference tracks. Hopefully it's not too out of whack.

Edit: Wow... I just noticed an egregious flaw during the part before the final chorus. While listening to the provided reference track, I noticed that there was an interesting tapping/legato part to the guitar riff. For whatever reason, that particular part is very quiet (comparatively less gain in my amp sim?) in my mix and it gets buried; I didn't even know it was there! Also noticed from the reference track that the volume tremolo lead part doesn't seem to be there, which makes it even easier to hear the riff.

AlleyKat is by far the best version imo.

It is opinion based as everything is to an extent. I like someone's else´s better..

    I´m not bashing anyone but->
AlleyKat for me is blowing up my mono cube, so technically is is really on the border.

Yeah it may be a little too thick in the low end globally but some are worse in this regard, like arcturus's one (sorry!) that's really relying heavily on sub. Btw, Arcturus's one would be my second choice. On par with Alen B, which is the most polished to my ears.

I'd chose Alleykat because among these 3 it's the one that sounds the less electronic.

I agree it's all relative and subjective etc but there's indeed some objectivity in simple comparisons with pro songs.

Not bashing neither. I am like most here, trying to fix my sound too !

    And you which one ?

philliwa for me, it can be mastered a bit as every can but yeah, it is weird judging mixes, have you ever heard Smells like teen spirit from 2 pro´s? Completely different vibe.

Yeah, i´ll probably loose my version a bit too, had to go thru Slipknot last night to figure it out and fix the vocal, constant learning is also the fun part of it.

What mono cube are you using, and what are you actually heaaring that is "wrong" ? Mono compatibility is important, but metal guitar group submixes can be "allowed" to be borderline crazy wide.

I missed this one. Indeed it may be the best one. For me a little too bumpy on the very low end but on par with the one i choosed.

It seems strange to me that you're more annoyed by Alleykat's mix than Philliwa's. My subwoofer says the contrary lol

Found Alen B(thought it was a members nick), yeah that one is also really good, in comparison my sounds like a pushed country song.

Alleykat´s has resonances in the upper mids and the vocal is a bit drowned, i wasn´t talking about the sub tho and i agree ofc, that is why i mention re-mastering(it could have the most potential).

@clone - 80´s prototype, something like alnico all paper cone. Blowing up meaning it is resonating/overpowering. I´d really like to find a very close comparison genre wise for this mix tho, what band would you name as a good one?

I think you already landed on a good one, Slipknot. And even then listeners and engineers have all kinds of conflicting views on the albums' mixing. Maybe the chunky guitar chugs might get you reference listening to Duality, but then with these guitar tapping and lead parts, maybe you check Gematria. Maybe for a bass, something like Pantera Far Beyond Driven. That track is nice how the bass can still punch through, but it's also very spatial image interesting. Or 5 Minutes Alone from the same record.

You could go a lot of different ways with this track.

    Sorry.
I actually listen on Eris 3.5 routinely. Things tend to resonnate around 100-120 hz, pushing things like palm mutes, rumble and toms.
But I find it not to be a major issue on AlleyKat's. There are worse pro records than this.

From the type of composition I'll go for some Devildriver (try between Beast and the alst kind words albums, btw if you don't know try 'dead to rights' song), or Arch enemy but recent like Deceivers deceivers.

The type of sound he seems to search for is between these bland modern all-the-same mixes and old warm melodic stuff.
To me the archetype of these modern sounds is Sylosis (a band i absolutely love), any of their 3 or 4 lasts recordings.
Try Deadwood song for easy listenning.

Another album that has this kind of sound, more modern though, is Parasite by Bullet from my valentine.

EDIT : after re listenning Philliwa's, finally even if it has some agreable elements like the snare warmth, is clearly not thick nor loud enough, and seems kinda raw compared to the two others.

Thx both of you guys, i´m down the list already.
Figuring guitars will be a job i see...my order was completely opposite of what this genre is.

If anyone is still comparing, i did the oversampled master chain which helped so the post is updated with another version.

@scoldt - other than that Metallica´s failed album(we know who mixed it), what is the pro record you are referring too as bad?

I´d go with Alen B, if phillwa would re-master, it could potentially be interesting mix, it could go a lot louder too if you get what i´m saying. If you compare you can hear the separation which is not as dominant as how Alen B version is pushed but still good to consider.

Sylosis -The New Flesh is a clean tidy round organic mix, taste wise i´d dig it. They are Slipknot´s clone in a way?
Being a techno dude you know, i always loved Static-X - The Only.

@clone - it could go in many ways.. but OP´s logic not providing a reference is a wise move too. That said, I´ll give another go soon, appreciate the infos.

    Hello !
I'm checking this site from time to time and I fortunately stumbled on this thread. I registered to post my mix of the song. It's more than a rough mix but definitely not a final one either. I did it in a a few hours. I usually spend a lot more time on a mix.
My experience in mixing metal and close genres is mostly black metal, industrial, a wee bit of doom/atmospheric stuff and some hardcore punk. Mostly dirty and noisy underground stuff. I think this background is more or less audible in my mix.

EDIT : sorry, I uploaded a wrong file. I'll send the right one tomorrow. Stupid me...

There are the notorious Rubin albums, among them Death Magnetic by Metallica and the horrendous Vol 3 by slipknot.
As a Slipknot fan from the first album, I was really disappointed when it came out, music wise like sound wise.
All is squashed in these 2.

I pretty much hate Mark Lewis prod in general with rare exceptions (astonishingly his ezmix is good). See Trust no one by devildriver, Really sucks to me. Poor toms... Your Cube will like the sustain of these palm mutes in the intro of "Daybreak".

The Dead and the Dreaming by Dry kill logic is quite messy too. Funny cause it seems to serve some passages of some songs, but it is definitely not ideal.

I love Static-x, until leader's death. Since Anything but this, old stuff.
Ly favs are The enemy, Start a war, forty ways, anything but this..; But i like a lot of songs.
    Dope was cool too.

I see what you mean about Sylosis. Singer's voice has changed a lot from an album to another and ended up being this kind of Corey Taylor/Rob Flynn type of voice but without imitating. I really really love his voice.
If you take older albums, it is more trashy, more techical, more complicated and his voice hasn't this Slipknot likeliness. But he always delivered some of the best screams i've heard. He is the lead guitarist at the same time and is a killer. Check Empyreal live on youtube you won't be deceived !

It's why I did not ask for the .logicx session file to load up the rough, or listened to most of the versions so far. Since I'm re-learning Cubase 15 after many years only using Logic anyway, I'll make it sound how I want to in Cubase from scratch instead of a template. But like someone mentioned earlier in the thread, it is a lot of room for what,in other genres we probably consider production more than just mixing. It's DI stems so pick your amp sims, preamps, and whatever else you want to use. We got a room file to use as a crush mic recording, and the rest is nicely recorded to give room for whatever you want.
