    Hey Peeps,
I'm looking for a compact digital mixer with adat i/o to replace my trusty old and Tascam FW 1884 which is a beast i love but in the last 2 months, the audio drop outs are frustrating & annoying.

in my search so far the one that's winning the race is the Yamaha 01v96i but it seems many don't like the menus so i here to ask what / if you guys have any other recommendations or solutions that could work for me.
i welcome & appreciate all help, solutions, suggestions or advice you can give.
    Thanks

Have you tried using a can of compressed air to clean all the contacts and sliders?

These Yamahas are excellent. The menu structure is different but not a big hurdle & if you use this board enough they really become second nature.:wink::bow:

electriclash - my first board was yamaha's 01x because i bought into the whole mLan network system as i had a i88x and (still have) a motif es rack.
i don't think i'll struggle with the learning curve but i agree Yamaha boards are one of the best and its the only board i have seen that has adat i/o... 01v96i looks a beast but what other board boast it feature set what other mixer does it compete with ?
    cheers

Truthfully, I have never used a digital mixer, but on regular hardware mixers that have cables attached, yes a poor signal can be caused by a poor connection. If you wiggle the wire it will cause drop outs.

Did you get the thread I posted to you that had the drop out problem , with all the potential fixes?

Well... I never ever thought i 'd be recommending a Behringer desk unless the seeker was desperately broke, but the Behringer x32 with 32 real Midas pre-amps and 25 moving faders for about 2000 dlrs US, is a winner. It doesn't have Adat i/o but chances are you won't be needing it since the mixer doubles as an audio interface too. We did put it in the studio against a Presonus Studiolive, a Yamaha 01v96i and a Soundcraft SI Impact and input to output with various sources like drums, synths,ac+el gtrs, bass and full DAW playback and rec, sounded better than all, to 6 experienced engineers/studio owners and myself. Feature wise it is also the most rich and most flexible of all. The build quality is mid class but surely a couple of notches above any previous Behringer mixer model and equal to any other digital mixer in the same price range.
It is no wonder why this mixer series is so popular that it has sold as much as all the other brands combined.
Also important, if all this i/o is not needed and the mixer seems too big, its smaller sibling the x32 Producer (much more compact, same sound/functionality, less physical i/o + faders) is a steal at about 1200 Us dlrs.
    Cheers
Ps: In case you're wondering, i 've been using digital mixers for more than 20 years. My studio's centerpiece for the last 11 years is a Tascam DM-4800 with 48 TDIF i/o ch, 16 Adat i/o ch and 24 analog in/8 analog out ch (TDIF i/o hooked on a couple of Motu 2408 mkIII for comp i/o, all else in various external sources). The DM-4800 replaced a couple of 01v Yamahas i had been using in cascade mode.

Thanks for your input sir - greatly appreciated. i'm gonna check out this board as its a contender.
as an expert in your field i wanted to get your thought on this
Now due to space issues, i'm considering a separate audio interface (like Focusrite Clarett 8 usb) and a daw controller (like faderport 8) as an alternative solution
i would appreciate your expertise and anyone else's input to help me make my up my mind.

    Thanks.

    You are welcome my friend.
As to your consideration, it all depends on who you are and what you do. If you record real instruments or vocals, have external gear like synths, gtrs and/or outboard units or all of the above, an 8 ch analog i/0 + Adat interface is very limiting. If all the work you do is in the comp box with maybe the exception of the occasional musician or vocalist recording, it may be just fine.
Still, from a professional's point of view, i still find the Faderport 8+Clarett 8 not a great selection at about 1400 euros. I like to have i/o options at any given time and control too. The X32 Producer looks like the perfect integrated solution for smaller studios. It doubles as an audio interface with all its physical inputs avail. in your daw and -afaik- as a DAW controller too with HUI, Mackie Control, ProTools modes etc (but no transport ctrl). Add to this the 16ch of Midas preamp inputs, 6 aux i/o, 8 programmable balanced outs + Stereo Monitors out + 2 x AES50, all for 1200 euros in a rackmountable 490 x 506 x 163 mm chassis, and it's a hard to beat selection as it offers too much in such a small package.
    Cheers :)

Behringer has been a very solid company in the last 10 years or so. Have two older analog xenyx mixers, everything still works 100%.

Yes, double that. My cousin (yep we 're a music fam eheh) gave me a 3 months old Xenyx 1204 USB about 4 years ago as he was leaving for Dubai and had no use for it. I put it in the rehearsal room to serve as a submixer for synths and it has been solid ever since. It even has a simple usb audio interface and it has saved me from a lot of hassle when synth players come with a laptop but no audiocard. My regulars don't even bring their own cards to rehearsals anymore. Sound quality is nothing phenomenal as these mixers came out before the Midas acquisition (although i doubt at 170 euros we 'll ever see a mixer with Midas pres) but rehearsals are not demanding anyway. I do have a 32ch Soundcraft anyway as my main rehearsal console if better sound quality is crucial.
