Best lyrics ever ... wonderful poetic imagery immaculately written

    I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
    I had flashes
    But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
    I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
    The whole of the moon

You were there in the turnstiles
With the wind at your heels
    You stretched for the stars
And you know how it feels
    To reach too high
    Too far
    Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

    I was grounded
    While you filled the skies
    I was dumbfounded by truth
    You cut through lies

I saw the rain dirty valley
    You saw Brigadoon
    I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon!

    I spoke about wings
    You just flew
    I wondered I guessed and I tried
    You just knew
    I sighed
    ... but you swooned!
    I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
    The whole of the moon!

With a torch in your pocket
And the wind at your heels
    You climbed on the ladder
And you know how it feels
    To get too high
    Too far
    Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
    The whole of the moon!

    Unicorns and cannonballs
    Palaces and piers
    Trumpets towers and tenements
    Wide oceans full of tears
    Flags rags ferryboats
    Scimitars and scarves
    Every precious dream and vision
    Underneath the stars

Yes you climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
    You came like a comet
    Blazing your trail
    Too high
    Too far
    Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

The "Unplugged" version ... it reminds me why I am inspired by music

I'd always liked their song "And a Bang on the Ear." New Waterboys album? Sounds like a good idea.

The "songwriting" presently floating to the top of popular music is concertedly and aggressively dumbed-down, base, brutal and dark-sided. There are still musicians writing poetic, insightful lyrics these days, but they tend to be "older" and hardly well-known. A span of a couple decades can reveal stark shifts in the way people think, insofar as how it can be gauged by popular music. Maybe it's also a reflection of what sort of crap people begrudgingly endure or willingly embrace.

Seven years ago, I tried to explain to a friend in her 20s that Todd Rundgren's song "Hello, It's Me" (when was that - 1970?) was hardly about a "booty call" or a man stringing a woman along for sex. (Perhaps that had been a projection on my friend's part, that trollop.) That might also indicates how young adults now think.

How did we get from Joni Mitchell to Rihanna? The same way we got from "I wanna hold your hand" to "I wanna fuck you like animal."

Some people would say that it hasn't happened by accident and is a part of sustained attack on the family unit, and the old ways of life. The organised entertainment industry has always be used as a propaganda tool by some shadowy figures.
